"The first regiment Berdan's United States Sharpshooters was one of the most unique organizations of the late war. Armed with Sharp's breech loading rifles they are a most formidable fighting body being the first to use the breech loaders. The first regiment recruited four companies from New York state, three from Michigan, one from Vermont, one from New Hampshire and one from Wisconsin. The regiment was under fire for three hundred days.

After the close of the war the three Michigan companies, C, I, and K, formed an association, the object being to hold annual reunions. The eighth annual reunion was held Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, June 16, 17 and 18, at the home of Henry Alchin, two miles and a half southwest of Durand.

Upon coming in sight of Mr. Alchin's home, the patriotic fever was manifested by the liberal display of Old Glory and banners. A large flag-staff had been erected and a large flag unfurled itself from the top. Flags were numerous around the yard and on the house, and conspicuous in a window were the American and Cuban flags crossed together. Above the entrance to the house was a large banner bearing the word "Welcome," and placed where all could see it was the motto "Remember the Maine."

A tent fitted with benches and platform had been provided, also a dining tent. Mr. and Mrs. Alchin had done everything in their power to care for the comforts of their guests, and were most loyal enterainers. The surviving members began to arrvie early Wednesday, and when the day set apart for the program and business came, Thursday, 19 representatives were present.
