The 1891 census records that Alfred was a schoolmaster (with his won school it seems) and he was living with his mother at High Street, West Malling. The 1901 census records that he was still a schoolmaster and he was living with his spinster sister at High Street, West Malling. Alfred died in 1905 aged 58 years (Malling 1905 June qtr Volume 2a Page 398). He was buried at West Malling on 22nd June 1905. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.10 ~~ Caroline Agnes Harriett Alchin Caroline, who was generally known as Agnes (to differentiate her from her mother?), was born at West Malling on 17th October 1850 (Malling 1850 December qtr Volume 5 Page 379). Caroline / Agnes was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 27th December 1850. At the time of the 1851 census she was only 5 months old and she was living with her family at High Street, West Malling. Charles married school teacher Elizabeth Chamberlain Cook at West Malling on 6th April 1874 (Malling 1874 June qtr Volume 2a Page 764). The witnesses to the wedding were Charles L. The 1881 census records that Charles was a builder and he and his family were living at the National School, Ryarsh where Elizabeth was the teacher. The 1891 census records that Elizabeth was still a teacher at Ryarsh. Also living with her were her two children, George and Ethel, and a 31 year old teacher from Gloucestershire, Alice Mills. The 1901 census records that Elizabeth was still a teacher at Ryarsh but this time she was joined by her eldest daughter as an assistant teacher. In both 1891 and 1901 the family was living in the school house at Ryarsh. Charles is not recorded with his family in either the 1891 or 1901 census but Elizabeth is shown as married and not widowed. Had they separated or was he in an asylum perhaps. However it appears that Charles may have died in London in 1897 aged 44 years (Wandsworth 1897 March qtr Volume 1d Page 352). Elizabeth probably died in 1931 aged 89 years (Reigate 1931 June qtr Volume 2a Page 287). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.11.1 ~~ Annie Amelia Alchin Annie was born at West Malling on 29th November 1874 (Malling 1874 December qtr Volume 2a Page 519). Stephen married Susannah Garland at All Saints’ church, Maidstone on 16th June 1827. The ceremony was performed by Rev’d W.H. Miller and the witnesses were Thomas Thompson and Rebecca Woodham. Susannah was born at Southwark, Surrey in about 1807. Stephen and Susannah had at least thirteen children – the eldest Caroline (1826) was born before their marriage but she generally used the surname of Alchin. The other children born after their marriage were - Mary (1828), William (1829), Stephen (1831), George (1833), Elizabeth (1836), Charles (1838), Thomas (1840), Richard (1843), Ann (1846), Harriett (1848), Susannah (1851) and John (1853). Like many other agricultural labourers in the 1820’s and 1830’s Stephen would have found life very difficult. Machinery was starting to replace manpower and in many places riots ensued. For year after year Stephen and many of his kinsmen at East Malling were unable to find work during the winter and relied on parish relief to feed their families. A large proportion of the population was malnourished and this of course contributed greatly to the infant mortality rate which at the best of times was appalling.
The 1851 census records that Stephen was employed as an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and nine of their children were still living at Mill Street. The 1861 census records that Stephen was employed as an agricultural labourer. He and Susannah and eight of their children and one grandchild were living at 30 Mill Street, East Malling. Susannah died at Well Street in 1870 aged 63 years (Malling 1870 September qtr Volume 2a Page 295) and she was buried at East Malling on 28th August 1870. The 1881 census records that Stephen was a widowed carpenter and he was living with the family of his eldest daughter Caroline Crittenden at Peacock Row, East Malling. Stephen suffered the ignominious end he had probably dreaded all his adult life. He died at the Malling Union Workhouse, West Malling aged 83 years (Malling 1890 December qtr Volume 2a Page 389). He was buried at East Malling by the Vicar (Septimus Wigan) on 12th October 1890. 1.3.5.2.2.2.3.1 ~~ Caroline Alchin Caroline was born at Hunton, Kent in about 1826 and she was baptised (and married) as Caroline Garland. The 1881 census also clearly shows that Caroline was the daughter of Stephen Alchin. Caroline married John Crittenden at East Malling on 15th December 1844. The record of her marriage says that her name was Caroline Garland but her father’s name is not recorded in the register. The witness to their wedding was Edwin Crittenden.
