By Steve Green (continued) Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 (continued) 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2 ~~ William Henry Alchin William was born at West Malling on 7th November 1830 and he was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 25th December 1830. The 1841 census records that he was living with his parents at High Street, West Malling. The 1851 census records that he was employed as a journeyman carpenter, possibly by his father. He was still living with his parents at High Street, West Malling. William married Emily Ann Usmar at Wrotham on 24th December 1855 (Malling 1855 December qtr Volume 2a Page 620). The witnesses to the ceremony were Henry Gibbs and William’s two sisters Clara Amelia Alchin and Louisa Agnes Alchin. Emily was born at West Malling on 8th April 1831, the daughter of Oliver Usmar, a watchmaker, and his wife Mary. Emily was actually baptised as Ann Amelia Usmar at West Malling on 6th May 1831. William and Emily had at least seven children – William (1857), Ada (1859), Emily (1861), Ellen (1863), Albert (1865), Elizabeth (1867) and Walter (1871). The 1861 census records that William was a carpenter and joiner and he and his wife and their two children were living at Brook Fields, West Malling. The 1871 census records that William was a master carpenter employing 4 men and 1 apprentice. He and his wife and their five children were living at 13 Mill Street, East Malling.
The 1881 census records that William was a master carpenter and he and his family were still living at Mill Street, East Malling. The 1891 census records that William was a carpenter and builder. He and his wife and their two unmarried children were living at Mill Street, East Malling. Emily died at Mill Street on 12th December 1898 aged 67 years (Malling 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 383) and she was buried at East Malling on 17th December 1898. The 1901 census records that William was a widowed builder and he and his son and his sister in law (Clara Usmar – born at West Malling in 1836) were living at Mill Street, East Malling. William died at Mill Street on 1st December 1918 aged 88 years (Malling 1918 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1882). He was buried at East Malling on 6th December 1918. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.1 ~~ William Henry Alchin William was born at West Malling on 6th May 1857 (Malling 1857 June qtr Volume 2a Page 329) and he was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 5th June 1857. The 1861 census records that William was living with his parents at Brook Fields, West Malling. The 1871 census records that William was a school boy and he was living with his family at 13 Mill Street, East Malling. The 1881 and 1891 census both record that the unmarried carpenter was living with his parents at Mill Street, East Malling. After the publication of the banns on 28th June and 5th and 12th July 1891, William married Alice Elizabeth Letchford at St James’ church, East Malling on 21st July 1891 (Malling 1891 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1043); she was born at East Malling in 1869. William and Alice had at least three children – Elsie (1892), Ethel (1894) and William (1896). The parish register records that William was a carpenter of High Street, East Malling. The 1901 census records that William was a house carpenter, probably working for or with his father. William and his wife and two of their children were living at High Street, East Malling. William died on 30th October 1934 aged 77 years (Malling 1934 December qtr Volume 2a Page 994). Alice died on 6th July 1961 aged 91 years (Maidstone 1961 September qtr Volume 5b Page 589). They are buried together with their daughter Ethel in St James’ churchyard, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.1.1 ~~ Elsie Usmar Alchin Elsie was born at High Street, East Malling on 30th June 1892 (Malling 1892 September qtr Volume 2a Page 538). She was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 7th August 1892. The 1901 census records that Elsie was staying with her widowed great-aunt Miriam Denman at Birling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.1.2 ~~ Ethel Fanny Alchin Ethel was born at High Street, East Malling on 30th April 1894 (Malling 1894 June qtr Volume 2a Page 610). She was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 10th June 1894. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at High Street, East Malling. Ethel never married and she died on 2nd November 1973 aged 79 years. She is buried with her parents in St James’ churchyard, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.1.3 ~~ William Henry Alchin William was born at High Street, East Malling on 27th June 1896 (Malling 1896 September qtr Volume 2a Page 637). He was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 12th July 1896. The 1901 census records that William was living with his family at High Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2 ~~ Ada Agnes Alchin Ada was born at West Malling on 25th January 1859 (Malling 1859 March qtr Volume 2a Page 378) and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 18th March 1859. The 1861 census records that Ada was living with her parents at Brook Fields, West Malling. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 13 Mill Street, East Malling. After the publication of the banns at St James’ church, East Malling on 19th and 26th September and 3rd October 1880, Ada married Charles Benjamin Hubble at East Malling on 30th October 1880 (Malling 1880 December qtr Volume 2a Page 881). The ceremony was performed by Rev’d Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were Thomas W. King, Emily Jane Alchin and William Henry Alchin. Charles was the son of Charles Hubble a haberdasher. He was born at Islington in London in 1855 but he possibly came from an old East Malling family. The 1881 census records that the newly married couple were living at 89 Westbourne Road, London. Charles was employed as a commercial traveller. Charles and Ada had at least ten children – Manala (1881), Elsie (1884), Charles (1886), Edith (1892), Oliver (1895), Alice (1897) and twins Ida and Leonard (1900). From the patterns of births it seems quite likely that they lost children who were born or miscarried in 1883, 1889 (Lily) and 1891 (Daisy). The 1891 census records that Charles was a haberdasher and he and his young family were living at 90 St James Road, Islington. The 1901 census records that Charles had risen in the world. He was a wholesale toy maker employing workers. He and his numerous family were living at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.1 ~~ Malanda (Mahala) Ada Hubble Malanda, sometimes recorded as Mahala, was born at Islington in 1881. The 1891 census records that Mahala was a school girl and she was living with her family at 90 St James Road, Islington. Malanda was a witness at the wedding of her aunt Emily Alchin at Aylesford in 1893. At the time of the 1901 census Malanda was still unmarried and she was living with her parents at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. No occupation is recorded for her. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.2 ~~ Elsie Maud Hubble Elsie was born at Islington in 1884 (Islington 1884 December qtr Volume 1b Page 319). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 90 St James Road, Islington. At the time of the 1901 census Elsie was living with her family at 69 Hartham Road, Islington and no occupation is recorded for her. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.3 ~~ Charles William Hubble Charles was born at Islington in 1886 (Islington 1886 September qtr Volume 1b Page 330). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 90 St James Road, Islington. At the time of the 1901 census Charles was living with his family at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.4 ~~ Lily Dorothy Hubble Lily was born at Islington in 1889 (Islington 1889 June qtr Volume 1b Page 315). Lily died there a few months later (Islington 1889 December qtr Volume 1b Page 194). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.5 ~~ Daisy May Hubble Daisy was born at Islington in 1891 (Islington 1891 September qtr Volume 1b Page 258). She did not survive for very long (Islington 1891 September qtr Volume 1b Page 181). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.6 ~~ Edith Sophia Hubble Edith was born at Islington in late 1892 (Islington 1892 December qtr Volume 1b Page 315). At the time of the 1901 census Edith was living with her family at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.7 ~~ Oliver Benjamin Hubble Oliver was born at Islington in 1895 (Islington 1895 March qtr Volume 1b Page 264). At the time of the 1901 census Oliver was living with his family at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.8 ~~ Alice Emily Hubble Alice was born at Islington in 1897 (Islington 1897 December qtr Volume 1b Page 317). At the time of the 1901 census Alice was living with her family at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.9 ~~ Ida Mary Hubble Ida and her twin brother Leonard were born at Islington in late 1900 (Islington 1900 September qtr Volume 1b Page 254). At the time of the census in 1901 they were 8 months old and living with their parents at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.2.10 ~~ Leonard Walter Hubble Leonard and his twin sister Ida were born at Islington in late 1900 (Islington 1900 September qtr Volume 1b Page 255). At the time of the census in 1901 they were 8 months old and living with their parents at 69 Hartham Road, Islington. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.3 ~~ Emily Jane Alchin Emily was born at West Malling in July 1861 (Malling 1861 September qtr Volume 2a Page 377) and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 25th August 1861. The 1871 census records that Emily was a school girl and she was living with her family at 13 Mill Street, East Malling. Both the 1881 and 1891 census record that Emily was an unmarried dressmaker. On both occasions she was living at The Rocks near East Malling. After the publication of the banns at St James’ church, East Malling on 3rd, 10th and 17th September 1893, Emily married Edgar Perrin at Aylesford on 28th October 1893 (Malling 1893 December qtr Volume 2a Page 377). The ceremony was performed by the Vicar, Rev’d Cyril Grant and the witnesses were William Henry Alchin and Malanda Ada Hubble. Edgar was a joiner, born at Aylesford in 1864, the son of William Perrin, a barge builder. Edgar and Emily had at least two children – Edgar (1894) and Marjorie (1897). The parish register records that Edgar was a carpenter of Ditton. The 1901 census records that Edgar was a carpenter and joiner and he and his wife and their two children were living at London Road, Ditton. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.3.1 ~~ Edgar Usmar Perrin Edgar was born at Ditton on 28th July 1894. He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 2nd September 1894. The 1901 census records that Edgar was a school boy and he was living with his family at London Road, Ditton. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.3.2 ~~ Marjorie U. Perrin Marjorie was born at Ditton in 1897. The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at London Road, Ditton. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.4 ~~ Ellen Amy Alchin Ellen was born at East Malling in 1863 (Malling 1863 September qtr Volume 2a Page 395) and she was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 5th July 1863. The 1871 census records that Ellen was a school girl and she was living with her family at 13 Mill Street, East Malling. The 1881 census records that Ellen was not yet married and she was living with her parents at Mill Street, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Ellen was still unmarried and she was living with her parents at East Malling. A year after the publication of the banns at St James’ church, East Malling on 29th April and 6th and 13th May 1893, Ellen married Thomas Wells at East Malling on 2nd June 1894 (Malling 1894 June qtr Volume 2a Page 961). The ceremony was performed by Rev’d Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were Mahala Ada Hubble and Ethel Wells. Thomas was a 24 year old brickmaker of Wateringbury Road, East Malling. He was the son of William Wells a builder. Thomas and Ellen are not recorded in the 1901 English census. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.5 ~~ Albert Oliver Alchin Albert, known also as Oliver, was born at East Malling on 15th July 1865 (Malling 1865 September qtr Volume 2a Page 414) and he was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 13th August 1865. The 1871 census records that Albert was a school boy and he was living with his family at 13 Mill Street, East Malling. The 1881 census records that he was living with his family at Mill Street, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Oliver was a joiner and he was lodging with Mary Droxall at 5 Church Street, Dunstable in Bedfordshire. The 1901 census records that Albert was a carpenter. He was unmarried and he was living with his widowed father at Mill Street, East Malling. In middle age Oliver married Eva Frances Knight at East Malling on 23rd January 1913 (Malling 1913 March qtr Volume 2a Page 1261); she was born on 27th October 1874 the daughter of the late William Knight who was a house steward. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d C.E. White and the witnesses were William Henry Alchin and Ada Murray Buckland. Albert died on 4th November 1930 aged 64 years (Malling 1930 December qtr Volume 2a Page 934). Eva died on 3rd July 1960 aged 85 years (Maidstone 1960 September qtr Volume 5b Page 586). They are buried together in St James’ churchyard, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.6 ~~ Elizabeth Clara Alchin Elizabeth was born at Mill Street, East Malling in 1867 (Malling 1867 December qtr Volume 2a Page 464) and she was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 4th November 1867. Unfortunately she did not live for very long. Elizabeth died at her home aged only one day and she was buried at East Malling on 9th November 1867 (Malling 1867 December qtr Volume 2a Page 263). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.7 ~~ Walter Usmar Alchin Walter was born at East Malling in early 1871 (Malling 1871 March qtr Volume 2a Page 519) and he was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 26th February 1871. The 1871 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with his family at 13 Mill Street, East Malling. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Mill Street, East Malling. The 1891 census records that Walter was a watchmaker’s assistant and he was living at 178-180 High Street, Croydon. Walter married Ada Louise Crompton in 1899 (Croydon 1899 December qtr Volume 2a Page 533); Ada was born at Croydon in 1874. The 1901 census records that Walter was a watchmaker, like his maternal grandfather Oliver Usmar. Walter and his wife were living at 78 Church Road, Croydon and at this stage they had no surviving children. Walter and Ada may have had a son who did not survive for long - Cyril (1904) and another son Maurice (1905). Ada died in 1949 aged 75 years (Surrey Mid E 1949 December qtr Volume 5g Page 293). Walter died in 1961 aged 90 years (Croydon 1961 September qtr Volume 5g Page 94). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.7.1 ~~ Cyril Usmar Alchin Cyril was born at Croydon in early 1904 (Croydon 1904 March qtr Volume 2a Page 239). He died a few months afterwards (Croydon 1904 September qtr Volume 2a Page 137). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.2.7.2 ~~ Maurice Usmar Alchin Maurice was born at Croydon on 18th August 1905 (Croydon 1905 September qtr Volume 2a Page 279). Maurice died in 1883 aged 77 years (Surrey SW 1983 June qtr Volume 17 Page 1184). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.3 ~~ Louisa Agnes Alchin Louisa was born at West Malling on 15th December 1832 and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 20th January 1833. The 1841 census records that Louisa was living with her parents at High Street, West Malling. The 1851 census records that she was still living with her family at West Malling. Louisa was a witness at the wedding of her eldest brother at Wrotham in 1855. The 1861 census records that Louisa was still unmarried and she was living with her family at High Street, West Malling. Louisa married Stephen Love at West Malling on 26th April 1863 (Malling 1863 June qtr Volume 2a Page 656). The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d R. Graham and the witnesses were William Alchin, William Henry Alchin and Henry Thomas Alchin. Stephen was born at Marden in 1833 the son of the late Edward Love who was a farmer. Stephen and Louisa had at least six children – Edward (1864), Louisa (1866), Agnes (1867), William (1869), Annie (1871) and Stephen (1872). The 1871 census records that Stephen was a grocer, draper and general outfitter employing two lads. He and his wife and their three eldest children were living at Peckham Green, West Peckham. The 1881 census records that Stephen was a grocer and draper and he and his wife and their four surviving children were living at West Peckham Street, West Peckham. Louisa died before 1891. The census of that year records that Stephen was a widowed shopkeeper and grocer and he and his three surviving children were living at West Peckham. The 1901 census records that Stephen was a widowed grocer, draper and shopkeeper and he and his unmarried daughter and son were still living at the same address. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.3.1 ~~ Edward Love Edward was born at West Peckham in 1864 (Malling 1864 September qtr Volume 2a Page 417) and he was baptised there on 14th August 1864. The 1871 census records that he was a school boy and he was living with his family at Peckham Green, West Peckham. The 1881 census records that Edward was assisting his father in their shop and he was living with his parents at West Peckham Street, West Peckham. The 1891 census records that Edward was assisting his father in their shop at West Peckham and he was unmarried. Edward married Minnie; she was born at West Peckham in 1871. The 1901 census records that Edward was a fruit grower and he and his wife were living at Plaxtol near Wrotham. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.3.2 ~~ Louisa Love Louisa was born at West Peckham in 1865 and she was baptised there on 26th November 1865. The 1871 census records that she was a school girl and she was living with her family at Peckham Green, West Peckham. The 1881 census records that Louisa was living at home with her parents at West Peckham Street, West Peckham. The 1891 census records that Louisa was the housekeeper for her father and brothers at West Peckham. The 1901 census records that Louisa was unmarried and she was still living with her widowed father (probably the reason she remained a spinster) at West Peckham Street, West Peckham. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.3.3 ~~ Agnes Love Agnes was born at West Peckham in 1867 and she was baptised there in November 1867. She probably died soon afterwards. Agnes is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1871 or 1881 census. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.3.4 ~~ William Love William was born at West Peckham in 1869 and he was baptised there on 10th January 1869. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Peckham Green, West Peckham. The 1881 census records that William was a school boy and he was living with his parents at West Peckham Street, West Peckham. The 1891 census records that William was assisting his widowed father to run their shop at West Peckham. The 1901 census records that William was a grocer, working for his widowed father. He and his sister lived with their father at West Peckham Street, West Peckham. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.3.5 ~~ Annie Love Annie was born at West Peckham and she was baptised there on 23rd July 1871. Annie probably died at a young age as she is not recorded with her family in the 1881 census. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.3.6 ~~ Stephen Love Stephen was born at West Peckham in 1872 (Malling 1872 December qtr Volume 2a Page 506) and he was baptised there on 1st December 1872. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with her family at West Peckham Street, West Peckham. Unfortunately Stephen died soon afterwards aged only 8 years (Malling 1881 June qtr Volume 2a Page 312). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4 ~~ George Alchin George was probably born at West Malling in 1834 although there is no proof as yet that he was the son of William and Caroline Alchin. His birth would however fill a gap in their children between 1832 and 1836. There is no George Alchin of his age recorded in the 1841 or 1851 census at East or West Malling and he may have been working away from home. George married Elizabeth Martin at West Malling on 2nd February 1856 (Malling 1856 March qtr Volume 2a Page 379). The ceremony was performed by Rev’d William Fox and the witnesses were John Nash and Caroline Martin. Caroline was the daughter of George Martin a labourer and he was born at West Malling in 1829 and it appears that she already had a daughter – Julia (1848). George and Elizabeth had at least five children – Thomas (1857), Frances (1859), Ann (1861), Eliza (1863) and Ellen (1865). The 1861 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he lived with his wife and their children at Austen’s Place, West Malling. The 1871 census records that George was still employed as an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their five children were living at 12 Springett’s Hill, East Malling. George and Elizabeth are not recorded in the 1881 census. They are recorded in the 1901 census but under the surname of “Allebin”. They were living with their daughter and son in law, James and Eliza Beckett at Mill Street, East Malling. George probably died in 1906 aged 71 years (Malling 1906 December qtr Volume 2a Page 435). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.1 ~~ Thomas William Alchin Thomas was born at New Barns, West Malling in 1857 (Malling 1857 March qtr Volume 2a Page 346) and he was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 26th April 1857. His birth was registered as Thomas Henry Alchin (Malling 1857 June qtr Volume 2a Page 329). Thomas is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1861 census and he may have been staying with relatives. The 1871 census records that Thomas was employed as an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at 12 Springett’s Hill, East Malling. Thomas married Rose Jane Chown at East Malling on 8th June 1879 (Malling 1879 June qtr Volume 2a Page 796). The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were John Wagon and Ernest Kelvie. Rose was the daughter of George Baldock and Jane Chown and she was born at Boughton in 1858. Thomas and Rose had at least three children – Frederick (1881), Thomas (1883) and Elizabeth (1885). Thomas died at East Malling in 1888 aged only 30 years (Malling 1888 June qtr Volume 2a Page 402). He was buried at East Malling on 11th March 1888. The 1891 census records that Rose was a paper mill and she and her two surviving children were living with her parents at High Street, East Malling. Rose married either William Fairman or Frederick Thomas Silk in 1892 (Maidstone 1892 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1180). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.1.1 ~~ Frederick Alchin Frederick was born at Southfleet in 1881 (Dartford 1881 September qtr Volume 2a Page 457). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother and his grandparents at High Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.1.2 ~~ Thomas Alchin Thomas was born at Maidstone in 1883 (Maidstone 1883 September qtr Volume 2a Page 676). He was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 6th February 1884 when he was already quite sick. Thomas died at The Heath aged only 8 months (Malling 1884 March qtr Volume 2a Page 363). He was buried at East Malling on 12th February 1884. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.1.3 ~~ Elizabeth Ann Alchin Elizabeth was born at East Malling in 1885 (Malling 1885 June qtr Volume 2a Page 282). She was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 5th July 1885. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother and her grandparents at High Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.2 ~~ Frances Mary Alchin Frances was born at West Malling in 1859 and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 28th August 1859. Her birth was however registered as Alice Frances Mary Alchin (Malling 1859 June qtr Volume 2a Page 358). The 1861 census records that Frances was living with her parents at Austen’s Place, West Malling. The 1871 census records that Frances was a school girl and she was living with her family at 12 Springett’s Hill, East Malling. Frances may have married either Jesse Aldridge or Henry James Hurrell at London in 1885 (Paddington 1885 June qtr Volume 1a Page 55). She is not recorded under either surname in the 1891 or 1901 census. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.3 ~~ Ann Harriett Alchin Ann was born at West Malling on 11th March 1861 (Malling 1861 June qtr Volume 2a Page 389). She was one month old at the time of the 1861 census and she was living with her parents at Austen’s Place, West Malling. Ann was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 30th June 1861. The 1871 census records that Ann was a school girl and she was living with her family at 12 Springett’s Hill, East Malling. She is not recorded in the 1881 English census. Ann married William Charles Costin at East Malling on 18th August 1894 (Malling 1894 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1103). William was a 27 year old labourer, the son of the late Charles Costin, also a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were James and Eliza Beckett. The couple must have had a rocky relationship which seems to have hit a few hurdles. They first published the banns for their marriage in March / April 1893 and then again in July / August 1894. Neither are recorded in the 1901 census. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.4 ~~ Eliza Adelaide Alchin Eliza was born at West Malling in late 1862 (Malling 1862 December qtr Volume 2a Page 397)and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 25th January 1863. The 1871 census records that Eliza was a school girl and she was living with her family at 12 Springett’s Hill, East Malling. After the publication of the banns at St James’ church, East Malling on 30th November and 7th and 14th December 1890, Eliza married James Richard Beckett at East Malling on 25th December 1890 (Malling 1890 December qtr Volume 2a page 1064). The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d Septimus Wigan and the witnesses were James Burgess and Emily Elizabeth Francis. James was born at East Malling in 1868 the son of John Beckett a papermaker. James and Eliza had at least two children – Elizabeth (1891) and James (1894). The 1891 census records that James was a labourer and he and his wife and their baby daughter were living at Mill Street, East Malling (they were sharing a house with George Warner and his family). The 1901 census records that Richard was employed as a labourer in the papermill and he and his wife and children were living at Mill Street, East Malling. Also living with them were Eliza’s parents. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.4.1 ~~ Elizabeth Ann Beckett Elizabeth was born at East Malling on 16th January 1891 (Malling 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 659). She was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on Easter Sunday 29th March 1891. The 1891 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with her family at Mill Street, East Malling. The 1901 census records that Elizabeth was living with her parents and grandparents at Mill Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.4.2 ~~ James Richard Beckett James was born at East Malling on 5th April 1894 (Malling 1894 June qtr Volume 2a Page 608). He was baptised at St James’ church, East Malling on 10th June 1894. The 1901 census records that James was living with his parents and grandparents at Mill Street, East Malling. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.4.5 ~~ Ellen Sarah Alchin Ellen was born at West Malling on 15th July 1865 (Malling 1865 September qtr Volume 2a Page 419). She was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 26th November 1865. The 1871 census records that Ellen (named however as Sarah) was a school girl and she was living with her family at 12 Springett’s Hill, East Malling. Ellen is not recorded in the 1881 English census. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.5 ~~ Clara Amelia Alchin Clara was born at West Malling on 9th November 1836 and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 23rd December 1836. The 1851 census records that she was living with her family at West Malling. Clara was a witness at the marriage of her eldest brother at Wrotham in 1855. Clara moved to London where she married (possibly to Charles Valentine Guy) in 1859 (St Martins 1859 June qtr Volume 1a Page 592). 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.6 ~~ Miriam Ellen Albina Alchin Miriam was born at West Malling in mid 1840 and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 23rd August 1840. The 1841 census records that the 10 month old baby girl was living with her parents at High Street, West Malling. The 1851 census records that she was still living with her family at West Malling. The 1861 census records that Miriam was still unmarried and she was living with her parents at High Street, West Malling. The 1871 census records that Miriam remained unmarried. She was staying with her eldest sister, Louisa Love who was heavily pregnant, at Peckham Green, West Peckham. Miriam eventually married John Denman, probably at West Malling in 1881 (Malling 1881 March qtr Volume 2a Page 669); he was born at Crawley, Sussex in 1843 and he had two children from his previous marriage. The 1891 census records that John was a painter and he and his wife and his two children were living at Birling Street, Birling. Miriam was widowed before 1901. The census of that year records that Miriam was selling sweets from her home at Birling. Living with her was her great niece Ellen Alchin daughter of William Henry Alchin and Alice Letchford. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.7 ~~ Sarah Ann Arabella Alchin Sarah was born at West Malling on 26th January 1843 (Malling 1843 March qtr Volume 5 Page 345) and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, West Malling on 2nd April 1843. The 1851 census records that she was living with her family at West Malling. Sarah married Walter Johnson Fogden at West Malling on 4th March 1867 (Malling 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 558); he was born at Rombolds Wyke, Surrey in 1845 the son of Henry Fogden who was a grocer. The ceremony was performed by Rev’d Edward R. Fisher and the witnesses were W. Alchin, William Henry Alchin, Stephen Love, M. Alchin, Emma Rabson and Agnes Alchin. Walter and Sarah had at least three children – Annie (1867), Marion (1869) and Edith (1872). The 1871 census records that Walter was a draper and he and his young family were living at East Street, Haslemere. Sarah died sometime between 1872 and 1875, probably from complications arising from childbirth. Her husband subsequently married Sarah’s niece Alice Rabson in 1875 and had three further children (see paragraph 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.1.2). The 1881 census records that Walter was a draper and he and his second wife and his five daughters were living at East Street, Haslemere. The 1891 census records that Walter and his wife and daughters were living at the same address. The family is not recorded in the 1901 English census. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.7.1 ~~ Annie Agnes Fogden Annie was born at Haslemere in 1867. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Haslemere. The 1881 census records that the schoolgirl was living with her family at East Street, Haslemere. The 1891 census records that Annie was unmarried and she was still living with her family at the same address. The 1901 census records that Annie was a governess for George and Kate Bartley at the Sacristan Vicarage, Witton Gilbert, Co Durham. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.7.2 ~~ Marion Minnie Fogden Marion was born at Haslemere in 1869. The 1871 census records that the young girl (named as Lilian) was living with her family at East Street, Haslemere. The 1881 census records that the schoolgirl was living with her family at East Street, Haslemere. The 1891 census records that Marion (named as Lilian M Fogden) was unmarried and she was still living with her family at the same address. 1.3.5.2.2.2.2.7.3 ~~ Edith May Fogden Edith was born at Haslemere in 1872. The 1881 census records that the schoolgirl was living with her family at East Street, Haslemere. The 1891 census records that Edith was unmarried and she was still living with her family at the same address. |
