Volume 2 – Kent: The Alchins of Meopham, Leybourne and the Mallings

Part 3 – Alchins of Leybourne and the Mallings, Kent 1680 – 1901 ...continued...

1.1.5.5  ~~  Christopher Alchin

Christopher was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 17th March 1732. After the publication of the banns on 7th, 14th and 21st January 1759, Christopher married Winifred Handford at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 18th February 1759. The service was performed by the curate Rev'd J. Butler and the witnesses were Daniel Peen and John Tunbridge. The wedding register records that both Christopher and Winifred were inhabitants of the parish of Aylesford.

The church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford

The church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford

Christopher and Winifred had at least four children – John (1760), Mary (1761), Elizabeth (1764) and Thomas (1767). Christopher was left the sum of 20 pounds when his father died in 1775. Christopher died in 1796 aged 64 years and he was buried at Aylesford on 6th July 1796. Winifred was buried at Aylesford on 17th February 1799. There is however no mention whatever of their children in the Aylesford parish registers after 1767.

1.1.5.5.1  ~~  John Alchin

John was born at Aylesford on 15th June 1760 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 29th June 1760. John may have married Elizabeth and had a son – Christopher (1789) at Ravenswood, Yorkshire (information supplied by Ann Foreman).

At this stage there is no proof to support this theory. John however was the right age, he is not found in the Aylesford area later and his son was given the name of John's father.

1.1.5.5.1.1  ~~  Christopher Alchin

Christopher was baptised at Kirby Hill, Ravenswood in Yorkshire on 15th April 1789. He returned to London where he married Ann Church at St Martins in the Fields on 11th May 1816. (Was Ann Church related to Elizabeth Church, daughter of Richard Church and Elizabeth Davison and who was born at Stepney in 1807, who married my ancestor George Alchin in the late 1820s).

Christopher and Ann had at least two children – Ann (1821) and Christopher (1825). Christopher took out a fire insurance policy for his premises (probably an inn) at 94 Fore Street, Cripplegate on 29th January 1829. Ann died before 1841.

The 1841 census records that Christopher was a victualler and he and his two children were living at Cripplegate in London. The 1851 census records that Christopher was a widowed victualer and he and his two children and a granddaughter were living at Leyton Street, Leyton.

Christopher sunsequently married Sarah Foreman very late in life in early 1861 (Barnet 1861 March qtr Volume 3a Page 111); she was born in Hampshire in about 1838 and she was almost 50 years his junior. The 1861 census records that Christopher was a retired farmer and he and his wife were living at Fallow Corner, Finchley. Also living with them was his grand-daughter Ann M. Jones who was born at Islington in 1845.

Christopher and Sarah had twin sons – Henry and Christopher (1863). Christopher died at Finchley in 1865 aged 75 years.

1.1.5.5.1.1.1  ~~  Ann Maria Alchin

Ann was born at Bethnal Green on 25th April 1821 and she was baptised at St Matthew's church, Bethnal Green on 22nd June 1821. The 1841 census records that Ann was living with her widowed father at Cripplegate. Ann married John Mathias Jones in 1845 (Barnet 1845 June qtr Volume 6 Page 631).

John and Ann had at least one child – Ann (1846). The 1851 census records that Ann and her daughter were living with her widowed father at Leyton Street, Leyton.

1.1.5.5.1.1.1.1  ~~  Ann M. Jones

Ann was born at Islington in 1846. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her mother and grandfather at Leyton Street, Leyton. The 1861 census records that Ann was still a school girl and she was living with her grand parents at Fallow Corner, Finchley.

1.1.5.5.1.1.2  ~~  Christopher John Newton Alchin

Christopher was baptised at St Giles' church, Cripplegate in London on 11th March 1825. The 1841 census records that Christopher was living with his widowed father at Cripplegate. The 1851 census records that Christopher was living with his widowed father at Leyton Street, Leyton.

Christopher married Louisa Freemantle at St George's church, Bloomsbury on 25th August 1863 (St Giles 1863 September qtr Volume 1b Page 695); she was born at Finchley in 1828. Christopher and Louisa had at least two children – Louisa (1866) and Christopher (1868).

The 1871 census records that Christopher was a licensed victualler and he and his wife and their two children were living at Woodman Public House, George Street, Greenwich. Christopher died at Finchley in 1874 aged 49 years (Barnet 1874 June qtr Volume 3a Page 94).

The 1881 census records that Louisa was a widowed dressmaker and she was living alone at Church End, Finchley. Louisa probably married either Henry William Donne or Charles Laughton in late 1882 (Islington 1882 December qtr Volume 1b Page 594).

1.1.5.5.1.1.2.1  ~~  Louisa Charlotte Catherine Alchin

Louisa was born at Finchley on 10th December 1866 (Islington 1867 March qtr Volume 1b Page 212). The 1871 census records that she (named as Catherine) was living with her family at Woodman Public House, George Street, Greenwich. The 1881 census records that Louisa was a scholar at the Asylum for Deaf and Dumb Poor Children, Victoria Road, Margate.

Louisa married Harry Edgar Collcutt at St John's church, Fulham on 29th July 1893 (Fulham 1893 September qtr Volume 1a Page 627).

1.1.5.5.1.1.2.2  ~~  Christopher John Newton Alchin

Christoper was born at Finchley on 10th March 1868 (Barnet 1868 June qtr Volume 3a Page 143). The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Woodman Public House, George Street, Greenwich. The 1881 census records that Christopher was a school boy at King Edward School, Wormley Hill near Godalming in Surrey.

Christopher married Frances Rosetta Dallas at St Mathias' church, Earls Court in London on 16th January 1892 (Kensington 1892 March qtr Volume 1a Page 181); she was born at Battersea in 1867. Christopher and Frances had at least two children – Christopher (1893) and Alfred (1897).

The 1901 census records that Christopher was a journeyman baker and he and his wife and their surviving son were living at 54 Mill Lane, Carshalton. Christopher died in 1927 aged 59 years (Epsom 1927 June qtr Volume 2a Page 24). Frances died in 1941 aged 74 years (Surrey Mid E 1941 December qtr Volume 2a Page 433).

1.1.5.5.1.1.2.2.1  ~~  Christopher John Newton Alchin

Christopher was born in January 1893 (Kensington 1893 March qtr Volume 1a Page 171). He died a few months later (Wandsworth 1893 September qtr Volume 1d Page 474).

1.1.5.5.1.1.2.2.2  ~~  Alfred Stevenson Alchin

Alfred was born at Kennington in London on 29th September 1897 (Lambeth 1897 December qtr Volume 1d Page 430). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 54 Mill Lane, Carshalton.

Alfred lived into very old age. He died in 1989 aged 91 years (Sutton May 1899 Volume 15 Entry 420).

1.1.5.5.1.1.3  ~~  Henry Stephenson Alchin

Henry and his twin brother Christopher were born at Finchley on 20th February 1863 (Barnet 1863 March qtr Volume 3a Page 118). The 1881 census records that Henry was working as a clerk and he was boarding at School Lane, Upholland in Lancashire.

Henry and his younger brother obviously had a taste for adventure and they must also have had at least some capital that allowed them to travel the world. Henry and Christopher migrated to the United States on the vessel SS 'Celtic' arriving at New York in June 1883. This obviously did not work out as Henry then moved on to Australia arriving in Victoria (as an unassisted passenger) aboard the "Potosi" in October 1884.

At some time Henry appears to have moved on again, this time to Queensland. He died in Queensland on 24th January 1925 aged 61 years (QLD 1925/000152). The death certificate index records his parents as John (sic) Alchin and Sarah Farebrother.

1.1.5.5.1.1.4  ~~  Christopher Alchin

Christopher and his twin brother were born at Finchley on 20th February 1863 (Barnet 1863 March qtr Volume 3a Page 118). The 1881 census records that Christopher was apprenticed to a tea dealer and he was living at 54 Market Place, Wigan in Lancashire.

Initially Christopher migrated to the United States arriving in New York with his brother Henry aboard the SS 'Celtic' in June 1883. Henry moved on to Australia the following year and Christopher probably followed him there aboard the vessel "Austral" in February 1886.

Christopher moved on to Queensland where he may have married Emily Pine Flay at some time. She was the daughter of George Flay and Emma Pine. Christopher and Emily do not appear to have had any children – they certainly didn't register the births of any children.

There is a record of Christopher being the licencee of two hotels at Gympie, Queensland – the Grand Hotel in 1895 and the Freemasons Hotel in 1899. Christopher died in Brisbane on 5th September 1930 aged 67 years (QLD 1930/B012028). Emily died at Brisbane on 19th April 1937 (QLD 1937/B035139).

1.1.5.5.2  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was born at Aylesford on 1st December 1761. She was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 6th December 1761.

1.1.5.5.3  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was born at Aylesford on 20th January 1764. She was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 29th January 1764.

1.1.5.5.4  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born at Aylesford on 19th February 1767. He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Aylesford on 1st March 1767.

1.1.5.6  ~~  Mary Alchin

Mary was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 17th March 1734. Mary named a man named Ward (see her father's will above). When her father died in 1775 she was left the sum of 20 pounds. It is possible that she was the wife of either Thomas or Richard Ward of West Malling who are both mentioned in the will of Nicholas Alchin dated 1773.

1.1.5.7  ~~  Elizabeth Alchin

Elizabeth was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 13th February 1736. Elizabeth never married, probably because she was required to look after her elderly parents. She was left the sum of 20 pounds when her father died in 1775.

1.1.5.8  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 16th October 1741. John may have married Ann Hills at East Malling on 4th April 1779 after the banns were published on 14th, 21st and 28th March 1779. The ceremony was performed by the Vicar Dan Hill and the witnesses were Robert and Mary Still. Both John and Ann were unmarried and parishioners of East Malling. Ann was born in about 1757.

John and Ann had at least five children – William (1779), Ann (1784), John (1786), Henry (1792) and Thomas (1798). John was the Executor and main beneficiary of his father's estate in 1775 (see his father' will above). John replaced the late James Sedger as Borsholder of East Malling in 1771. At the time John was a farmer.

John may have been buried at East Malling on 16th January 1831 although the burial register gives his age as 81 years. Ann may have died at East Malling aged 76 years. She was buried at East Malling on 23rd June 1833.

(Note the John Alchin who married Ann Hills may alternatively have been born in 1745 the son of Thomas Alchin and Ann Perrett see paragraph 1.1.3.3.3 above).

1.1.5.8.1  ~~  William Alchin

William was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 22nd August 1779. William married Mary, possibly Mary Wickenden at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 25th May 1801. William and Mary had at least four children – Ann (1802), William (1804), Thomas (1806) and John (1810). William  moved his family between East Malling and Wateringbury a number of times.

Mary died before 1851. The census of that year shows that William was widowed and a pauper on parish relief. He was living with his married son John at The Heath, East Malling. William was buried at East Malling on 23rd December 1853 aged 74 years.

1.1.5.8.1.1  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 18th April 1802.

1.1.5.8.1.2  ~~  William Henry Alchin

William was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 10th July 1804. William died aged only 5 weeks and he was buried at East Malling on 5th August 1804.

1.1.5.8.1.3  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 2nd February 1806. Thomas died at Larkfield Heath aged 52 years (Maidstone 1858 September qtr Volume 2a Page 293) and he was buried at East Malling on 12th September 1858.

1.1.5.8.1.4  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Wateringbury on 4th February 1810. John married Charlotte Derwin at Maidstone on 3rd October 1841 (Maidstone 1841 December qtr Volume 5 Page 431); she was born at East Malling in 1809 the daughter of William Derwin a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd Brenchley and the witnesses were William Alchin & Harriett Currier.

John and Charlotte probably had no children. The 1851 census records that John was an agricultural labourer. He and his wife and his widowed father were living at the Heath, East Malling. John died before 1871. The census of that year records that his widow was living with her sister Caroline White at 3 Peacock Row, East Malling.

Charlotte died at her home on Peacock Row, East Malling in 1879 aged 70 years (Malling 1879 June qtr Volume 2a Page 329) and she was buried at East Malling on 12th April 1879.

1.1.5.8.2  ~~  Ann Alchin

Ann was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 13th June 1784.

1.1.5.8.3  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 20th October 1786. John died aged 15 years and he was buried at East Malling on 16th September 1802.

1.1.5.8.4  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 18th March 1792. Henry married Ann Smith at All Saints' church, Maidstone on 29th June 1829. Ann was a widow (her maiden name may have been Herron) and she was born in Kent in 1792. The ceremony was performed by Rev'd W. Harrison and the witnesses were Robert Wickenden and Catherine Boorman.

There is no record of Henry and Ann baptising any children at East Malling or the surrounding villages. The 1841 census records that Henry was employed as an agricultural labourer. He and his wife and daughter (? aged 30) were living at East Malling. Ann died in 1845 aged 53 years (Malling 1845 December qtr Volume 5 page 232) and she was buried at East Malling on 2nd November 1845.

The 1851 census records that Henry was a widowed agricultural labourer living with his step daughter Ann Herron (she was born at East Malling in 1817) and granddaughter Eliza Herron (she was born at East Malling in 1837) at High Street, East Malling. Henry was still alive when he was left one eighth of the estate of his Peggy Alchin when she died in 1851. Henry may have died aged about 60 years (Malling 1854 March qtr Volume 2a Page ***) and he was buried at East Malling on 9th April 1854.

1.1.5.8.5  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 15th April 1798 but he may have been born as early as 1795. Thomas married Elizabeth Rebecca (according to the baptism records of their children in the parish register); her surname is unproven but she was born at Sutton at Hone in 1798 and she was commonly referred to in other documents as Rebecca Alchin.  There is a record of Thomas Alchin marrying Rebecca Holt at Northfleet on 26th February 1816 and it seems likely that this marriage refers to this couple.

Thomas and Rebecca had at least eleven children – John (1816), Henry (1819), Mary (1821), Thomas (1823), Joseph (1825), Jane (1828), Charles (1830), James (1833), Thomas (1835), Betsy (1838) and William (1841). According to the East Malling parish registers, Thomas was a labourer.

The 1841 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Mill Street, East Malling. The 1851 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer. He and his wife and their four unmarried sons were still living at Mill Street, East Malling. The 1861 census records that Thomas was employed as an agricultural labourer. He and his wife and their two sons were living at 28 Mill Street, East Malling.

Thomas probably died within a few months of the census. He was buried at East Malling on 30th October 1861 aged 66 years. The wedding certificate of his youngest son William in 1862 confirms that Thomas had died by this time. The 1871 census records that Rebecca was a pauper living at the Malling Union Workhouse at West Malling.

Rebecca died at the Union Workhouse, West Malling aged 75 years (Malling 1871 December qtr Volume 2a Page 274). She was buried at East Malling on 8th November 1871.

1.1.5.8.5.1  ~~  John Alchin

John was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 15th December 1816. John may have been in trouble with the law and this may have lead him to enlist in the Army to escape punishment. A John Alchin appeared before the Maidstone Quarter Sessions in January 1836 to face a felony charge for which transportation was the likely penalty. However the records show that John was "discharged" – possibly on the proviso that he enlisted.

John Alchin enlisted in the 1st Battalion of the Rifle Brigade of the British Army at Rochester on 25th October 1836. He was 19 years and 11 months old and he was previously employed as a labourer. John was given the rank of Private, the regimental number 1291 and he was paid a bounty of 3 pounds for enlisting.

John's attestation papers give his physical description: Height 5 foot 8 & 5/8 inches; Sallow complexion; grey eyes and light brown hair. He had no distinctive marks. John was examined at Chatham by Robert Rankin, the Regimental Surgeon. The surgeon's certificate confirmed that John:

"has no rupture nor mark of an old Wound or Ulcer adhering to the Bone; he is free from Varicose Veins of the Legs, and has the full power of motion of the Joints and Limbs. He is well formed, and has no Scrofulous Affection of the Glands, Scald Head, or other inveterate Cutaneous Eruptions; and he is free from any trace of Corporal Punishment. His respiration is easy, and his Lungs appear to be sound. He has the perfect use of his Eyes and Ears. His general Appearance is Healthy and he possesses strength sufficient to enable him to undergo the fatigue to which soldiers are liable. I consider him fit for His Majesty's Service."

John did not have a happy time in the Army and Surgeon Rankin must have been blind, drunk or corrupt. John served a period of imprisonment (reason not stated) from 26th December 1837 until 6 January 1838. He was discharged from the Army on 22nd August 1838 after less than 2 years service and having never served overseas.

In June 1838 Surgeon Rankin had changed his mind about John's health. He reported to the Regimental Board at Woolwich that John Alchin "aged 21 years 11/12  a Soldier. Has been very inefficient as a Soldier. He is constitutionally strongly scrofulous (tubercular swelling of the glands, particularly in the neck) – Has been much in Hospital with scrofulous swellings in the neck and is not likely to make an efficient soldier. His conduct in Hospital good. His complaint neither caused nor aggravated by intent, licence or vice nor the effects of Service."

John was discharged on medical grounds "according to the surgeon's reports this is a case of scrofulous enlargement of the glands not caused by vice or misconduct." Despite this his discharge report carried an endorsement "that his conduct has been indifferent." I have not located John in any of the subsequent census returns and he may have died soon afterwards or even migrated.

1.1.5.8.5.2  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 17th January 1819. The 1851 census records that Henry was an unmarried agricultural labourer and he was living with his family at Mill Street, East Malling. After the publication of the banns on 4th, 11th and 18th December 1853, Henry married Eliza Evenden at East Malling on 5th February 1854 (Malling 1854 March qtr Volume 2a Page 359). Eliza was the daughter of the late William Evenden and she was born at Aylesford in 1827. The witnesses to their wedding were James and Mary Ann Broad and William Thornhill.

Henry and Eliza had at least six children – Henry (1855), Thomas (1857), Mary (1860), James (1863), William (1866) and Jane (1873). No doubt there were several other children who have not yet been identified. The 1861 census records that Henry was employed as an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and infant daughter were living at Back Street, East Malling.

The 1871 census records that Henry was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at St Leonards Street, West Malling. The 1881 census records that Henry was a farm labourer and he was living at West Malling with his wife and their two youngest surviving children.

Henry died in 1887 aged 67 years (Malling 1887 June qtr Volume 2a Page 326) and he was buried at West Malling on 28th May 1887. The 1891 census records that the widowed Eliza was living with two of her children, a grandson and a boarder Walter Jury (the father of her grandson?) at Back Street, West Malling.

Eliza died at the Union Workhouse, West Malling aged 71 years and she was buried at West Malling on 5th November 1898 (Malling 1898 December qtr Volume 2a Page 386).

1.1.5.8.5.2.1  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was born at The Heath in 1855 (Malling 1855 June qtr Volume 2a Page 313) and he was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 15th April 1855. Henry died at Larkfield Heath aged about 13 months and he was buried at East Malling on 6th May 1856 (Malling 1856 June qtr Volume 2a Page 217).

1.1.5.8.5.2.2  ~~  Thomas Alchin

Thomas was born at Mill Cottages in 1857 (Malling 1857 June qtr Volume 2a Page 313). He was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 3rd May 1857. Thomas was a witness at the wedding of his sister Mary Ann to Thomas Simmons in 1877. There are two marriages which may relate to him, the first to Sarah Ann Mitchell in 1876 and the second to Rose Jane Chown in 1879.

Thomas probably died in 1888 aged 30 years (Malling 1888 March qtr Volume 2a Page 402) and he was buried at West Malling on 11th March 1888.

1.1.5.8.5.2.3  ~~  Mary Ann Alchin

Mary was born at West Malling on 4th March 1860 (Malling 1860 March qtr Volume 2a Page 393). She was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 30th March 1860. The 1861 census records that Mary Ann was living with her parents at Back Street, West Malling.

The 1871 census records that Mary was living with her family at St Leonards Street, West Malling. Mary had a natural born child – Henry (1877). Six months later Mary married Thomas Edward Simmons at West Malling on 20th October 1877 (Malling 1877 December qtr Volume 2a Page 843).

Thomas was a 22 year old labourer of Malling (his father was unknown according to his marriage certificate). The witnesses to their wedding were Charles Evans and Thomas Alchin and the ceremony was performed by Rev'd J.A. Boodle. There is no further record of this family in England.

1.1.5.8.5.2.3.1  ~~  Henry Alchin

Henry was born at West Malling on 18th March 1877 and he was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 11th May 1877. There is no further record of Henry or his parents in England and they probably emigrated.

1.1.5.8.5.2.4  ~~  James Alfred Alchin

James was born at West Malling on 6th January 1863 (Malling 1863 March qtr Volume 2a Page 432). He was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 24th April 1863. The 1871 census records that James was living with his family at St Leonards Street, West Malling. It is not recorded whether or not he was attending school.

The 1881 census records that James was a 19 year old unmarried farm labourer living with his parents at West Malling. The 1891 census records that he was an unmarried farm labourer living with his widowed mother at Back Street, West Malling. The 1901 census records James' occupation as a carter on a farm. He was still unmarried and he was an inmate of the Malling Union Workhouse. James died in 1927 aged 64 years (Malling 1927 June qtr Volume 2a Page 864).

1.1.5.8.5.2.5  ~~  William Alchin

William was born at West Malling on 6th January 1866 (Malling 1866 March qtr Volume 2a Page 464). He was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 9th February 1866. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at St Leonards Street, West Malling. He is not recorded in the 1881 census with his family.

After the death of his father, William enlisted in the British Army at Maidstone on 7th December 1887. His attestation sheet describes him as being 5' 5" tall, fresh complexion, grey eyes and brown hair. William was posted as a Private # 2279 in the Royal West Kent Regiment and he spent many years in India and other British colonies.

The 1901 census possibly records him as a Private in the Army, based probably at Maidstone. At the time of his first discharge on 19th December 1901 William intimated that he would be a labourer and he would be living at 21 Camden Street, Maidstone.

William married Louise Charlotte Doust on 24th August 1901 (Hollingbourn 1901 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1695). William and his wife had at least four children – Annie (1905), Arthur (1906), Jennie (1910) and Grace (1913).

William re-enlisted in the Army at the beginning of the 1st World War and spent the next five years serving with his regiment. The last couple of years with the Home Guard. Jane  had two natural bornsons –  Zachariah (1889) and Henry (1891) and from the way that the family is recorded in the 1891 census it appears that Walter Jury, a 19 year old paper mill worker from Ightam, was the father at least of her second son. Jane and her son Henry were living with her widowed mother and Walter Jury at Back Street, West Malling.

Jane subsequently married Walter Jury later that year (Malling 1891 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1049).
