The 1851 census records that John was a waterman and he was living with his parents at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. John married Sarah Rachel (her surname is presently unknown); she was born at Stepney in 1833. John and Sarah had at least two children – Charlotte (1857) and Charles (1859). The 1861 census records that John was a waterman and lighterman and he and his wife and their two children were living at Clifton Baths, Gravesend. The 1871 census records that John was the master of the vessel 'Brothers 2' which was moored on the Thames at London. Sarah died before 1881 and John subsequently married Elizabeth; she was born at Plumstead in about 1826. The 1881 census records that John was an engineering labourer and he and his second wife were living at 5 Cage Lane, Plumstead. John died in 1891 aged 61 years (Strood 1891 December qtr Volume 2a Page 327). 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.1.1 ~~ Charlotte Ann Jewiss Charlotte was born at Gravesend in 1857 (Gravesend 1857 June qtr Volume 2a Page 243) and she was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 12th April 1857. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Clifton Baths, Gravesend. The 1881 census records that Charlotte was working as a domestic servant at 42 Cobham Street, Gravesend. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.1.2 ~~ Charles Benjamin Jewiss Charles was born at Gravesend in 1859 and he was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 16th January 1859. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Clifton Baths, Gravesend. Charles married Mary Ann Golds in 1884 (North Aylesford 1884 June qtr Volume 2a Page 765); she was born at Northfleet in 1857. Charles and Mary had at least four children – Ethel (1884), Florence (1886), Charles (1888) and Lottie (1890). The 1891 census records that Charles was a barge lighterman and he and his wife and their four children were living at 22 South Street, Northfleet. Mary died in 1893 aged only 36 years (Gravesend 1893 December qtr Volume 2a Page 332). Charles subsequently married Agnes Elizabeth Sewell in 1897 (Strood 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 731); she was born at Shorne in 1853. The 1901 census records that Charles was a barge captian and waterman and he and his second wife and two of his children were living at 18 Station Street, Northfleet. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.1.2.1 ~~ Ethel Agnes Jewiss Ethel was born at Gravesend in 1884 (Gravesend 1884 December qtr Volume 2a Page 456). The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 22 South Street, Gravesend. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.1.2.3 ~~ Charles Jewiss Charles was born at Northfleet in 1888. The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 22 South Street, Northfleet. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his parents at 18 Station Street, Northfleet. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.1.2.4 ~~ Lottie Jewiss Lottie was born at Northfleet in 1890 (Strood 1890 March qtr Volume 2a Page 548). The 1891 census records that the infant was living with her family at 22 South Street, Northfleet. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 18 Station Street, Northfleet. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.2 ~~ William Jewiss William was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Milton by Gravesend on 29th August 1832. He married and had at least one son – William (1861). The 1861 census records that William was a married hawker and he was lodging at 1 Crooked Lane, Milton by Gravesend. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.2.1 ~~ William Jewiss William was born at Gravesend in 1861. The 1881 census records that he was an unmarried carpenter. William was living with his widowed grandmother at 5 Albion Street, Milton by Gravesend. The 1891 census records that William was an unmarried general labourer and he was living with his uncle Walter Henry Jewiss at 97 Charles Street, Stone. William probably died in 1900 aged 39 years (Gravesend 1900 March qtr Volume 2a Page 479). 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.3 ~~ Eliza Jewiss Eliza was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 3rd January 1834. The 1851 census records that Eliza was living with her parents at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. Eliza had a son born outside of marriage – Arthur (1858). 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.3.1 ~~ Arthur James Jewiss Arthur was born at Gravesend in 1857 and he was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 17th January 1858. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his maternal grandparents at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.4 ~~ Mary Ann Jewiss Mary was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 20th December 1835. The 1851 census records that Mary was a school girl and she was living with her parents at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.5 ~~ Emma Charlotte Jewiss Emma was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 10th June 1838 (Gravesend 1838 June qtr Volume 5 Page 187). The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. William married Ann Allen; she was born at Gravesend in 1841. William and Ann had at least three children – William (1864), Henry (1866) and Ann (1870). William died in late 1870 aged only 29 years (Gravesend 1870 December qtr Volume 2a Page 232). The 1871 census records that Ann was a widow and she and her three children were living with her widowed mother (Lucy Allen) at 47 Wakefield Street, Gravesend. The 1891 census records that Ann was widowed storekeeper and she and her daughter were still living at the same address. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.6.1 ~~ William H. Jewiss William was born at Gravesend in 1864 and he was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 28th February 1864. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at 47 Wakefield Street, Gravesend. William proved to be as short-lived as his father. He died in 1890 aged only 26 years (Gravesend 1890 December qtr Volume 2a Page 317). 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.6.2 ~~ Henry Walter Jewiss Henry was born at Gravesend in 1866 and he was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 1st July 1866. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his widowed mother at 47 Wakefield Street, Gravesend. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.6.3 ~~ Ann Jewiss Ann was born at Gravesend in late 1870 (Gravesend 1870 December qtr Volume 2a Page 390). The 1871 census records that the 5 month old infant was living with her widowed mother at 47 Wakefield Street, Gravesend. The 1891 census records that Ann was still living with her widowed mother at the same address. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.7 ~~ James Masters Jewiss James was born at Gravesend in 1843 (Gravesend 1843 June qtr Volume 5 Page 134) and he was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 11th June 1843. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. James is not recorded with his family in the 1861 census and he was probably at sea on that day. James married Charlotte; she was born at Corringham, Essex in 1843. James and Charlotte ahd at least four children – Henry (1863), Charlotte (1866), Charlotte (1868) and Emma (1871). The 1871 census records that James was a waterman and he and his wife and their three surviving children were living at 8 Bath Street, Gravesend. James is not recorded in the 1881 or 1891 English census and he was probably at sea on both occasions. The 1901 census records that James was a waterman / lighterman and he and his wife and their eldest son were living at 11 Girdon Road, Northfleet. Charlotte died in 1909 aged 66 years (Strood 1909 March qtr Volume 2a Page 486). James died in 1910 aged 67 years (Strood 1910 March qtr Volume 2a Page 424). 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.7.1 ~~ Henry James Jewiss Henry was born at Gravesend in 1863 and he was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 6th December 1863. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 8 Bath Street, Gravesend. The 1901 census records that Henry was a vocalist and musician. He was unmarried and he was living with his parents at 11 Gordon Road, Northfleet. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.7.2 ~~ Charlotte Rachel Ruth Jewiss Charlotte was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 1st July 1866. Charlotte died the following year aged several months (Gravesend 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 229). 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.7.3 ~~ Charlotte Masters Jewiss Charlotte was born at Gravesend in 1868 (Gravesend 1868 March qtr Volume 2a Page 400). She was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 16th February 1868. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 8 Bath Street, Gravesend. The 1871 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with her family at 8 Bath Street, Gravesend. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.8 ~~ Ellen Jewiss Ellen was born at Gravesend in 1846 and she was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 19th April 1846. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. The 1861 census records that Ellen was a school girl and she was living with her parents at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. The 1871 census records that Ellen was a domestic servant, she was unmarried and she was still living with her parents at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. Ellen married James Buckle in London in 1878 (Stepney 1878 March qtr Volume 1c Page 689); he was born at Worplesden in 1843. James and Ellen had at least two children – James (1879) and Albert (1882). The 1881 census records that James was a storekeeper and he and his wife and their eldest son were living at 5 Albion Road, Milton. They were sharing the house with Ellen's elderly mother. James died in 1884 aged 42 years (Gravesend 1884 December qtr Volume 2a Page 296). The 1891 census records that Ellen was living on her own means and she and her two sons were living at 151 Wellington Street, Milton. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.8.1 ~~ James Samuel Buckle James was born at Gravesend in 1879 (Gravesend 1879 December qtr Volume 2a Page 462). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 5 Albion Road, Milton. The 1891 census records that James was a school boy and he was living with his widowed mother at 151 Wellington Street, Milton. James died in 1908 aged only 28 years (Gravesend 1908 March qtr Volume 2a Page 452). 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.8.2 ~~ Albert Buckle Albert was born at Gravesend in 1882. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at 151 Wellington Street, Milton. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.9 ~~ Walter Henry Jewiss Walter was born at Gravesend in 1851 and he was baptised at St George's church, Gravesend on 30th April 1851. He must have been born within days of the 1851 census. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 3 Clifton Road, Gravesend. Walter is not recorded in the 1871 English census and he was probably at sea at the time. Walter married Emily Mary Sibley in 1872 (Gravesend 1872 December qtr Volume 2a Page 600); she was born in Oxford Street, London in 1851. Walter and Emily had at least eleven children – Walter (1873), Arthur (1875), Percy (1877), Emily (1879), Horace (1881), Cecil (1883), Herbert (1885), Mary (1887), Ernest (1889), Roy (1890) and Lilian (1892). The 1881 census records that Walter was a lighterman and he and his wife and four of their children (one other child was staying with friends / relatives) were living at 79 West Street, Gravesend. The 1891 census records that Walter was a lighterman and he and his wife and ten of their children were living at 97 Charles Street, Stone. The 1901 census records that Emily and five of their children were living at 20 Brunswick Road, Milton. Emily is listed as married and not widowed and so it is likely that Walter was again at sea during the census. 1.1.4.1.1.1.7.9.1 ~~ Walter Charles Jewiss Walter was born at Gravesend in 1873 (Gravesend 1873 June qtr Volume 2a Page 394). The 1891 census records that Walter was a shipwright's apprentice and he was living with his parents at 97 Charles Street, Stone. Walter married Ellen E.; she was born at New Brompton in 1876. Walter and Ellen had at least three children – Florence (1898), Ellen (1899) and Horace (1901). The 1901 census records that Percy was a lighterman and he was lodging at 83 Charles Street, Stone. She was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 1st October 1775. 1.1.4.1.1.7 ~~ Lydia Jewiss Lydia was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 6th August 1777. She died aged 17 years and she was buried at Meopham on 16th September 1794. 1.1.4.1.1.8 ~~ Sarah Jewiss Sarah was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 23rd May 1779. Sarah probably married George Golding at St Mary's church, Horton Kirby on 31st October 1803. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev'd Fountain and the witnesses were Maria Thickbroom and Richard Boatland. George was born in Kent in 1873. George and Sarah had at least two children – George (1805) and John (1808). Sarah died before 1841 and she may even have died before 1810. The 1841 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he and his younger son were living at South Darenth near Horton Kirby. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1 ~~ George Golding George was born at Horton Kirby in 1805 and he was baptised at St Mary's church, Horton Kirby on 1st December 1805. George married Mary; she was born at Horton Kirby in 1809. George and Mary had at least six children – George (1837), Charlotte (1839), Rebecca (1843), Michael (1845), Thomas (1851) and John (1853). The 1841 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their two children were living at South Darenth. There is no surviving record of George and his family in the 1851 census. The 1861 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and Mary was a laundress. The couple and four of their children were living at Bexley. The 1871 census records that George was still an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their 2 year old grandson Albert Newbury were living at #4 Alms House, High Street, Bexley. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.1 ~~ George Golding George was born at Horton Kirby in 1837. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Horton Kirby. George married Sarah Ann; she was born at Aylesford in 1831. The 1861 census records that George was a Police Constable and he and his wife were living at 28 Cumberland Street, Chelsea. Golding Rebecca was born at Horton Kirby in 1843 (Dartford 1843 September qtr Volume 5 Page 104). The 1861 census records that Rebecca was living with her parents at Bexley. Rebecca married John H. Newbury (Newberry) in the late 1860's; he was born at Bermondsey in 1842, the son of James and Louisa Newbury. John and Rebecca had at least seven children – Albert (1868), Ada (1870), Kate (1873), John (1875), Thomas (1877), George (1881) and William (1883). The 1871 census records that John was a leather currier and he and his wife and their two young children were living with his parents at Elfin Villa # 2, Heber Road, Camberwell. The 1881 census records that John was a bricklayer's labourer and he and his wife and their six children were living at 2 Albert Road, Bexley. The 1891 census records that John was a leather currier again and he and his wife and six of their children were living at #2 Hudson's Cottages, Upton Road, Bexley. The 1901 census records that John was now working as a gas fitter's labourer and he and his wife and their two youngest sons were living at 3 Standard Road, Bexley. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.3.1 ~~ Albert Newbury Albert was born at Camberwell in 1868. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Elfin Villa # 2, Heber Road, Camberwell. Albert is also recorded as staying with his maternal grandparents at #4 Alms House, High Street, Bexley. Perhaps he was staying with his grandparents due to an illness in his family. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Albert Road, Bexley. The 1891 census records that Albert was an unmarried baker's assistant and he was living with his parents at #2 Hudson's Cottages, Upton Road, Bexley. There is no surviving record of Albert in the 1901 English census. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.3.2 ~~ Ada Newbury Ada was born at Camberwell in 1870. The 1871 census records that the toddler was living with her family at Elfin Villa # 2, Heber Road, Camberwell. The 1891 census records that John was an errand boy and he was living with his parents at #2 Hudson's Cottages, Upton Road, Bexley. The 1901 census records that John was an unmarried coachman for F.W. Cauley at 32 Donaldson Street, Willesden in London. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.3.5 ~~ Thomas Newbury Thomas was born at Bexley Heath in 1877. The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 2 Albert Road, Bexley. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at #2 Hudson's Cottages, Upton Road, Bexley. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.3.6 ~~ George Newbury George was born at Bexley Heath on Sunday 3rd April 1881. The 1881 census records that the newly born un-named boy was living with his family at 2 Albert Road, Bexley. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at #2 Hudson's Cottages, Upton Road, Bexley. The 1901 census records that George was a bricklayer's labourer and he was living with his parents at 3 Standard Road, Bexley. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.3.7 ~~ William Golding William was born at Bexley in 1883. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at #2 Hudson's Cottages, Upton Road, Bexley. The 1901 census records that William was a builder's carman and he was living with his parents at 3 Standard Road, Bexley. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.4 ~~ Michael Golding Michael was born at Bexley in 1845. The 1861 census records that Michael was a labourer and he was living with his parents at Bexley. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.5 ~~ Thomas Golding Thomas was born at Bexley in 1851. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bexley. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.6 ~~ John Golding John was born at Bexley in 1853. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bexley. John married Eliza; she was born at Bermondsey in 1855. John and Eliza had at least four children – John (1880), Eliza (1882), Robert (1884) and Henry (1890). The 1881 census records that John was a baker and Eliza a shopkeeper. The young couple and their infant son were living above the baker's shop at Bexley. The 1891 census records that John was a cabman and he and his wife and their four children were living at 64 Laura Street, Newington (south-east London). The 1901 census records that John was a cab proprietor and he and his wife and their two sons were living at 58 Laura Street, Newington. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.6.1 ~~ John William Golding John was born at Bexley in 1879 (Dartford 1879 December qtr Volume 2a Page 407). The 1881 census records that the toddler was living with his family above the baker's shop at Bexley. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 64 Laura Street, Newington. The 1901 census records that John was an unmarried salesman and he was living with his parents at 58 Laura Street, Newington. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.6.2 ~~ Eliza E. Golding Eliza was born somewhere in Essex in about 1882 (based on the 1891 census transcript which is partly illegible). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 64 Laura Street, Newington. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.6.3 ~~ Robert Percy Golding Robert, sometimes known as Percy, was born at Plumstead in 1884. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 64 Laura Street, Newington. The 1901 census records that Robert (Percy) was a carpenter and he was living with his parents at 58 Laura Street, Newington. 1.1.4.1.1.8.1.6.4 ~~ Henry Golding Henry was born at Kennington in 1890. The 1891 census records that the toddler was living with his family at 64 Laura Street, Newington. 1.1.4.1.1.8.2 ~~ John Golding John was born at Horton Kirby in 1808 and he was baptised at St Mary's church, Horton Kirby on 28th February 1808. The 1841 census records that John was an unmarried agricultural labourer and he was living with his father at South Darenth near Horton Kirby. 1.1.4.1.1.9 ~~ Jane Jewiss Jane is only known from her burial records. She was buried at Meopham on 24th July 1791. 1.1.4.2 ~~ Thomas Alchin Thomas was baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 21st June 1721. 1.1.4.3 ~~ Elizabeth Alchin Elizabeth and her brother William were baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 10th November 1722. 1.1.4.4 ~~ William Alchin William and his sister Elizabeth were baptised at the church of St John the Baptist, Meopham on 10th November 1722. 1.1.5 ~~ Anthony Alchin Anthony was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 21st April 1697. He married Deborah of whom no other details are known at this stage. Anthony and Deborah had nine children – Deborah (1724), Thomas (1725), Richard (1727), Rachel (1729), Christopher (1731), Mary (1733), Elizabeth (1735), John (1741) and Anthony (1744). All of their children were baptised at St James' church, East Malling. Anthony was appointed Constable of East Malling in 18765 replacing John Hunt. At the time Anthony was a farmer. Deborah was buried at East Malling on 5th May 1768. Anthony probably died aged 78 years in 1775 when the probate of a will in his name was proved. He was buried at East Malling on 30th July 1775. Anthony left the bulk of his estate to his second youngest son John. Other bequests were left to his daughters Deborah, Rachel, Mary and Elizabeth and two of his sons Thomas and Christopher. Neither Richard nor Anthony junior are mentioned in his will ( PROB 11/1009 reproduced below):
1.1.5.1 ~~ Deborah Alchin Deborah was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 5th September 1724. She married a man named Nichols, possibly Thomas Nichols who was baptised at West Malling on 23rd November 1722. Thomas was the illegitimate son of Susan Nichols. This wedding is uncertain but there is a record of a Thomas Nichols marrying an unknown woman (the bride's name is illegible) at Rochester on 9th August 1748. There is no surviving record of any other marriage concerning any Deborah Alchin. Deborah was still alive in 1775 when her father left her the sum of 20 pounds. Thomas may have died at Rochester and he was buried at St Nicholas' church, Rochester on 27th November 1761. Deborah died aged 81 years and she was buried at Birling on 24th August 1806. 1.1.5.2 ~~ Thomas Alchin Thomas was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 19th December 1725. Thomas was left the sum of 20 pounds when his father died in 1775. 1.1.5.3 ~~ Richard Alchin Richard was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 11th April 1727. Richard was not mentioned in his father's will dated 1775 and he may have died by this stage. 1.1.5.4 ~~ Rachel Alchin Rachel was baptised at St James' church, East Malling on 10th January 1729. After the publication of the banns at West Malling on 4th, 11th and 18th May 1755, Rachel married George Stevens at East Malling on 19th May 1755. George and Rachel had at least six children who were all baptised at West Malling – Sarah (1756), George (1758), Mary (1761), William (1763), Thomas (1765) and Elizabeth (1767). Rachel was left 20 pounds by her father when he died in 1775. George Stevens died before 1809. When Rachel died aged 81 years the burial register described her as a widow. She was buried at West Malling on 19th May 1809. 1.1.5.4.1 ~~ Sarah Stevens Sarah was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 7th April 1756. 1.1.5.4.2 ~~ George Stevens George was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 5th March 1758. 1.1.5.4.3 ~~ Mary Stevens Mary was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 15th February 1761. 1.1.5.4.4 ~~ William Stevens William was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 23rd January 1763. William may have married Sarah and they had at least two children – Sarah (1791) and Harriett (1792). William is described in the parish records as a pauper. Sarah probably died from complications arising from childbirth. She was buried at West Malling on 1st February 1793. 1.1.5.4.4.1 ~~ Sarah Stevens Sarah was born at West Malling on 14th February 1791. She was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 11th March 1791. 1.1.5.4.4.2 ~~ Harriett Stevens Harriett was born at West Malling on 30th December 1792. Harriett was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 1st February 1793, the same day that her mother was buried. 1.1.5.4.5 ~~ Thomas Stevens Thomas was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 10th July 1765. 1.1.5.4.6 ~~ Elizabeth Stevens Elizabeth was baptised at St Mary's church, West Malling on 7th June 1767. An Elizabeth Stevens baptised several illegitimate children at West Malling between 1788 and 1796. |
