Part 1d – The Descendants of William Alchorne and Jane Booker of Shoreham ...continued... 1.6 ~~ William Alchin/Alchorne William was born at Farnborough (according to the 1851 census) or Otford (according to the 1881 census and probably correct) on 6th April 1800 and he was baptised as William Alchin at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 27th April 1800. William married Ann Teel at Shoreham on 7th January 1826; she was born at Carshalton in 1808. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Vicar, Rev’d Robert Price and the witnesses were Thomas Wellard and Edward Medhurst. On 8th July 1826 William and Ann were the witnesses at the weddings of his brother David to Mary Ann Cooper and of his sister Ann to Jonathan Tylor. William and Ann had at least eight children – Henry (1826), Jane (1828), Maria (1832), William (1834), Eliza (1839), Elizabeth (1842), William (1845) and Rowland (1848). The four children who survived infancy were raised as Alchornes rather than as Alchins. The 1851 census records that William (using the surname Alchin) was a farm labourer and he and his wife, four of their children and a grandson were living at Farnborough. The 1861 census records that William (Alchorn) was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife, their son and their grandson were living at Farnborough. The 1871 census records that William (Alchorne) was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their grandson were living at Farnborough Street, Farnborough. The 1881 census records that William (Alchin) was a labourer and he and his wife and their grandson were living at Farnborough. William died in 1886 aged 87 years (Bromley 1886 June qtr Volume 2a Page 232). Ann died in 1897 also aged 87 years (Bromley 1897 March qtr Volume 2a Page 275). 1.6.1 ~~ Henry Allchorne Henry was probably born at Shoreham in 1826 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 10th December 1826. 1.6.2 ~~ Jane Allchorne Jane was born at Farnborough in 1828. She had a natural born child – William (1849). Jane subsequently married James Coghlan in 1850 (Bromley 1850 September qtr Volume 2a Page 87); he was born in 1825. The 1851 census records that Jane and her son were living with her parents at Farnborough. There is no other record of Jane or her husband and her child was raised by his maternal grandparents. 1.6.2.1 ~~ William Allchorne/Alchin William was born at Farnborough in 1849. The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his mother and grandparents at Farnborough. The 1861 census records that the school boy (here called William Butland) was living with his grandparents at Farnborough. The 1871 census records that William (Alchorne) was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his grandparents at Farnborough Street, Farnborough. The 1881 census records that William (Alchin) was an agricultural labourer and he was still living with his grandparents at Farnborough. William married Emily Maud Mace in 1890 (Bromley 1890 September qtr Volume 2a Page 771); she was born in 1870 (and so more than 20 years younger than her husband), the daughter of Alfred and Dorothy Mace. William and Emily had at least six children, the first two of whom were born before their parent’s marriage – Victor (1887), Walter (1889), Agnes (1891), Florence (1894), Maud (1895) and Frederick (1899). The 1891 census records that William was a labourer and he and his wife and their three very young children were living with his wife’s parents at High Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that William was a bricklayer’s labourer and he and his wife and four of their children were living at Pleasant View, Farnborough. William died in 1929 aged 80 years. Emily died in 1948 aged 78 years. 1.6.2.1.1 ~~ Victor Allchorne Victor was born at Farnborough in 1887 before his parent’s marriage (he was however surnamed Allchorne in both the 1891 and 1901 census). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his extended family at High Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that the school boy was staying with his maternal grandparents at 1 Wellclose Villas, Farnborough. 1.6.2.1.2 ~~ Walter Allchorne Walter was born at Farnborough in 1889 before his parent’s marriage (he was however surnamed Allchorne in both the 1891 and 1901 census). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his extended family at High Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that the school boy was staying with his maternal grandparents at 1 Wellclose Villas, Farnborough. 1.6.2.1.3 ~~ Agnes Gertrude Allchorne Agnes was born at Farnborough in January 1891 (Bromley 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 458). The 1891 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with her extended family at High Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Pleasant View, Farnborough. 1.6.2.1.4 ~~ Florence Ethel Allchorne Florence was born at Farnborough in 1894 (Bromley 1894 September qtr Volume 2a Page 429). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Pleasant View, Farnborough. 1.6.2.1.5 ~~ Maud Allchorne Maud was born at Farnborough in 1895. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Pleasant View, Farnborough. 1.6.2.1.6 ~~ Frederick Allchorne Frederick was born at Farnborough in 1899 (Bromley 1899 September qtr Volume 2a Page 513). The 1901 census records that the toddler was living with his family at Pleasant View, Farnborough. 1.6.3 ~~ Maria Alchin / Allchorne Maria was born at Farnborough in 1832 and she was baptised as Maria Alchin at Farnborough on 28th October 1832. Maria died at Farnborough in 1833 aged less than 1 year. 1.6.4 ~~ William Alchin / Allchorne William was born at Farnborough in 1834 and he was baptised as William Alchin at Farnborough on 23rd September 1834. William died at Farnborough in 1836 aged 2 years. His name was re-used in 1845. 1.6.5 ~~ Eliza Allchorne Eliza was born at Farnborough in 1839. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Farnborough. Eliza married Anthony Woodgate; he was born at Orpington in 1836, the son of Anthony and Mary Woodgate. William and Eliza had at least three children – Mary (1857), Eliza (1860) and William (1862). The 1861 census records that Anthony was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their two daughters were living at ‘Leaves Green’, Cudham in Kent. Eliza died in the 1860’s and Anthony subsequently married Harriett; she was born at Beckenham in 1845. The 1871 census records that Anthony was a plate layer and he and his second wife and two of his children were living at Wellington Road, Orpington. 1.6.5.1 ~~ Mary Ann Woodgate Mary was born at Orpington in 1857. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at ‘Leaves Green’, Orpington. The 1871 census records that Mary was a papermaker and she was living with her father ands step-mother at Wellington Road, Orpington. 1.6.5.2 ~~ Eliza Woodgate Eliza was born at Orpington in 1860. The 1861 census records that the 5 month old infant was living with her family at ‘Leaves Green’, Orpington. 1.6.5.3 ~~ William Woodgate William was born at Orpington in 1862. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Wellington Roadm Orpington. 1.6.6 ~~ Elizabeth Allchorne Elizabeth was born at Farnborough in 1842. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Farnborough. Elizabeth married Thomas Grover in 1864 (Bromley 1864 June qtr Volume 2a Page 439); he was born at Orpington in 1841. Thomas and Elizabeth had at least six children – Josiah (1866), Thomas (1868), Naomi (1870), Rhoda (1873), Elizabeth (1875) and Benjamin (1881). The 1871 census records that Thomas was a carpenter and joiner and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at # 2 Colgate Cottages, Broad Street Green, Farnborough. The 1881 census records that Thomas was a builder’s foreman and he and his wife and their six children were living at 2 Verbena Cottages, Odessa Road, West Ham. Thomas died in the 1880’s. The 1891 census records that Elizabeth was widowed and she was living with her newly married daughter and her husband (John and Naomi Winter) at 145 Ramsay Road, Wanstead in Essex. 1.6.6.1 ~~ Josiah Grover Josiah was born at Bethnal Green in the east end of London in 1866 (Bethnal Green 1866 June qtr Volume 1c Page 271). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at # 2 Colgate Cottages, Broad Street Green, Farnborough. The 1881 census records that Josiah was a bricklayer’s apprentice and he was living with his parents at 2 Verbena Cottages, Odessa Road, West Ham. The 1891 census records that Josiah was an unmarried bricklayer and he was living with his uncle and namesake at 89 Field Road, West Ham. Josiah married Alice; she was born at West Ham in 1866. Josiah and Alice had at least two children – Josiah (1898) and Herbert (1899). The 1901 census records that Josiah was a foreman bricklayer and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at 31 Ramsay Road, Cann Hall, Essex. 1.6.6.1.1 ~~ Josiah William Grover Josiah was born at West Ham in 1898 (West Ham 1898 September qtr Volume 4a Page 185). The 1901 census records that the infant was living with his family at 31 Ramsay Road, Cann Hall. 1.6.6.1.2 ~~ Herbert Grover Herbert was born at West Ham in 1899 (West Ham 1899 December qtr Volume 4a Page 351). The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Verbena Cottages, Odessa Road, West Ham. 1.6.6.3 ~~ Naomi Grover Naomi was born at Farnborough in 1871 (Bromley 1871 December qtr Volume 2a Page 338). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Verbena Cottages, Odessa Road, West Ham. Naomi married John Winter; he was born at Seaford, Sussex in 1867. The 1871 census records that John was a shirt cutter and the newly weds were living at 145 Ramsay Road, Wanstead in Essex. Also living with them were Naomi’s mother and her younger sister and brother. John and Naomi had at least three children – Winifred (1892), Gladys (1893) and Irene (1896). The 1901 census records that John was a shirt cutter and he and his wife and their three children were living at 13 Bromhouse Road, Cann Hall. 1.6.6.3.1 ~~ Winifred Naomi Winter Winifred was born at Forest Gate in 1892 (West Ham 1892 March qtr Volume 4a Page 263). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 13 Bromhouse Road, Cann Hall. 1.6.6.3.2 ~~ Gladys Winter Gladys was born at Forest Gate in 1893 (West Ham 1893 December qtr Volume 4a Page 262). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 13 Bromhouse Road, Cann Hall. 1.6.6.3.3 ~~ Irene May Winter Irene was born at Forest Gate in 1896 (West Ham 1896 June qtr Volume 4a Page 322). The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 13 Bromhouse Road, Cann Hall. 1.6.6.4 ~~ Rhoda Violet Grover Rhoda was born at Farnborough in 1873 (Bromley 1873 March qtr Volume 2a Page 367). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Verbena Cottages, Odessa Road, West Ham. Rhoda may have married either George Deacon or Charles William F. Thornton in 1895 (West Ham 1895 December qtr Volume 4a Page 458). Rhoda is not recorded under either surname in the 1901 English census. 1.6.6.5 ~~ Elizabeth Martha Grover Elizabeth was born at Stratford, Essex in 1875 (West Ham 1875 June qtr Volume 4a Page 67). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Verbena Cottages, Odessa Road, West Ham. The 1891 census records that Elizabeth was a ‘stay binder’ and she was living with her married sister at 145 Ramsay Road, Wanstead in Essex. Elizabeth may have married Charles John A.G. Solomon in 1894 (West Ham 1894 June qtr Volume 4a Page 147). There is no record of her in the 1901 English census. 1.6.6.6 ~~ Benjamin Grover Benjamin was born at Forest Gate in March 1881. The 1881 census records that the 3 week old infant was living with his family at 2 Verbena Cottages, Odessa Road, West Ham. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his extended family at 145 Ramsay Road, Wanstead in Essex. 1.6.7 ~~ William Allchorne William was born at Farnborough in 1845 and he was the second son to bear his name. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Farnborough. The 1861 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he was still living with his parents at Farnborough. William married Elizabeth (Lizzie) Weekes in 1869 (Bromley 1869 December qtr Volume 2a Page 467); she was born at Ticehurst in 1849. William and Lizzie had at least eight children – Elizabeth (1870), Edith (1873), William (1877), Frederick (1880), Florence (1882), Thomas (1884), Neville (1886) and Henry (1891). The 1871 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their baby daughter were living at Farnborough Street, Farnborough. The 1881 census records that William (Allcherne) was a labourer and he and his wife and their four children were living at Farnborough. The 1891 census records that William was a labourer and he and his wife, six of their children and a grandson were living at Church Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that William was a road labourer and he and his wife, their three children and a grandson (listed as their son) were living at High Street, Farnborough. 1.6.7.1 ~~ Elizabeth Jane Allchorne Elizabeth was born at Farnborough in 1870 (Bromley 1870 September qtr Volume 2a Page 346). The 1871 census records that the 7 month old infant was living with her family at Farnborough Street, Farnborough. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Farnborough. Elizabeth had a natural born child – George (1890). The 1891 census records that Elizabeth and her child were living with her parents at Church Road, Farnborough. Elizabeth subsequently married Peter John Page in 1894 (Bromley 1894 June qtr Volume 2a Page 685); he was born at Canterbury in 1869. Peter and Elizabeth had at least two children – Alice (1893) and William (1895). The 1901 census records that Peter was a general labourer and he and his wife and their two children were living at High Street, Farnborough. Peter died in 1929 aged 60 years. Elizabeth died in 1966 aged 96 years. 1.6.7.1.1 ~~ George Sidney Allchorne George was born at Farnborough in 1890 (Bromley 1890 September qtr Volume 2a Page 433). The 1891 census records that the 10 month old infant was living with his extended family at Church Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his grandparents at High Street, Farnborough. George married Hilda Alice Horewood; she was born in 1884. George and Hilda had at least one child – Roy. George died in 1949 aged 59 years. Hilda died in 1972 aged 88 years. 1.6.7.1.2 ~~ Alice S.M. Page Alice was born at Farnborough in 1893. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at High Street, Farnborough. 1.6.7.1.3 ~~ William J. Page William was born at Farnborough in 1895. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at High Street, Farnborough. 1.6.7.2 ~~ Edith Ann Allchorne Edith was born at Farnborough in 1873 (Bromley 1873 March qtr Volume 2a Page 372). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Farnborough. Edith was not living with her family at the time of the 1891 census and she had probably already gone into service. The 1901 census records that Edith was still unmarried. She was working as a cook for Reginald and Mary Barnes at Elmhurst Villa, Hayes. Edith married Alfred Comley in 1902 (Bromley 1902 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1062); he was born in 1871. 1.6.7.3 ~~ William George Allchorne William was born at Farnborough in 1877 (Bromley 1877 September qtr Volume 2a Page 369). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Farnborough. The 1891 census records that William was a gardener and he was living with his parents at Church Road, Farnborough. William died a few months later aged 14 years (Bromley 1891 September qtr Volume 2a Page 206). 1.6.7.4 ~~ Frederick John Allchorne Frederick was born at Farnborough in 1880 (Bromley 1880 June qtr Volume 2a Page 405). The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Farnborough. Frederick died in 1885 aged 5 years (Bromley 1885 June qtr Volume 2a Page 264). 1.6.7.5 ~~ Florence Eliza Allchorne Florence was born at Farnborough in 1882 (Bromley 1882 September qtr Volume 2a Page 431). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Church Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that Florence was living with her parents at High Street, Farnborough. Florence married Robert Burbeck in 1902 (Bromley 1902 September qtr Volume 2a Page 1092); he was born in the 1880’s. Robert died in 1931 aged 43 (?) years. Florence died in 1967 aged 85 years. 1.6.7.6 ~~ Thomas James Allchorne Thomas was born at Farnborough in 1884 (Bromley 1884 September qtr Volume 2a Page 418). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Church Road, Farnborough. Thomas was not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1901 census. Thomas married Lucretia Matilda Banks in 1903 (Bromley 1903 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1010); she was born in 1884. Thomas died in 1967 aged 83 years. Lucretia died in 1973 aged 89 years. 1.6.7.7 ~~ Neville Allchorne Neville was born at Farnborough in 1886 (Bromley 1886 September qtr Volume 2a Page 448). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Church Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that Neville was a general labourer and he was living with his parents at High Street, Farnborough. 1.6.7.8 ~~ Henry Charles Allchorne Henry was born at Farnborough in 1891 (Bromley 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 458). The 1891 census records that the 3 month old infant was living with his family at Church Road, Farnborough. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at High Street, Farnborough. Henry married Annie Lidbetter in 1911 (Bromley 1911 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1093); she was born in 1890. Henry died in 1986 aged 95 years. Annie died in 1986 aged 96 years. 1.6.8 ~~ Rowland Allchorne Rowland was born at Farnborough in 1848. Rowland did not survive infancy and he died the same year. 1.7 ~~ David Alchin/Allchorne David was born at Shoreham on 19th January 1803 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 2nd February 1803. He married Mary Ann Cooper at Shoreham on 8th July 1826; she was born in 1803. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d Robert Price and the witnesses were William and Ann Allchorne David and Mary had at least two children – Jane (1827) and David (1829). The younger child was born posthumously after the death of his father. Both of the children generally but not exclusively used the surname Allchorne. According to his daughter’s marriage certificate David was a labourer. David died in 1828 aged only 25 years and he was buried at Shoreham on 24th August 1828. Mary may have died in 1839 (Sevenoaks 1839 March qtr Volume 5 Page 305). 1.7.1 ~~ Jane Allchorne Jane was born at Shoreham in 1827 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 22nd April 1827. Jane married Frederick Hills at Shoreham on 16th October 1848 (Sevenoaks 1848 December qtr Volume 2a Page 535); he was born at Chelsfield in 1825. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d Edward Repton and the witnesses were David Allchorne (her brother) and Thomas Medhurst (the parish clerk). Frederick and Jane had at least eleven children – Edith (1849), Mary (1850), Frederick (1852), Agnes (1854), William (1856), Emma (1858), George (1860), Alice (1863), Thomas (1864), Walter (1867) and Jane (1870). The 1851 census records that Frederick was a labourer and he and his wife and their infant daughter were living at Chelsfield. Frederick moved his family to London in late 1860 or early 1861. The 1861 census records that Frederick was a carman and he and his wife and their five young children were living at 2 Albert Terrace, Lambeth. The 1871 census records that Frederick was a porter in the Bermondsey beast market and he and his wife and seven of their children were living at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. Frederick and his family must have emigrated as there is no record of any of them in any subsequent English census. Jane died in 1890 aged 63 years. Frederick died in 1910 aged 85 years. 1.7.1.1 ~~ Edith Hills Edith was probably born at Chelsfield in 1849. She was not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1851 census and she probably died soon after her birth in 1849. 1.7.1.2 ~~ Mary Ann Hills Mary was born at Chelsfield in 1850. The 1851 census records that the 7 month old infant was living with her family at Chelsfield. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Albert Terrace, Lambeth. Mary married Augustus Reinig; he was born in 1845. After his death, Mary married James M. Shafer; he was born in 1857. 1.7.1.3 ~~ Frederick Hills Frederick was born at Chelsfield in 1852. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 2 Albert Terrace, Lambeth. The 1871 census records that Frederick was living with his parents at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. Frederick married Jane Devinia Swanton; she was born in 1855. 1.7.1.4 ~~ Agnes Hills Agnes was born at Chelsfield in 1854. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 2 Albert Terrace, Lambeth. Agnes was not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1871 census and she was probably working as a servant. Agnes married William Dyer; he was born in 1854. Agnes died in 1915 aged 61 years. William died in 1929 aged 75 years. 1.7.1.5 ~~ William Hills William was born at Chelsfield in 1856. William probably died in 1858 aged 2 years. He is not recorded with the rest of his family in the 1861 census and this confirms that he died in infancy. 1.7.1.6 ~~ Emma Elizabeth Hills Emma was born at Chelsfield in 1858. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 2 Albert Terrace, Lambeth. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. Emma married John Thomas Walker; he was born in 1857. John died in 1884 aged only 27 years. 1.7.1.7 ~~ George W. Hills George was born at St Mary Cray in 1860. The 1861 census records that the 6 month old infant was living with his family at 2 Albert Terrace, Lambeth. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. 1.7.1.8 ~~ Alice Annie Hills Alice was born at Kennington in 1863. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. 1.7.1.9 ~~ Thomas Holland Hills Thomas was born at Kennington in 1864. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. 1.7.1.10 ~~ Walter Nehpi Hills Walter was born at Kennington in 1867. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. 1.7.1.11 ~~ Jane Laura Hills Jane was born at Camberwell in 1870. The 1871 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her family at 18 Hargreaves Square, Bermondsey. 1.7.2 ~~ David Allchorne David was born at Shoreham in either late 1828 or early 1829 after the death of his father in August 1828. He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 15th February 1829. The 1851 census records that David (surnamed Allchorn) was an unmarried labourer and he was lodging at the White Hart Inn, Shoreham. David married Emma Lee in 1857 (Dartford 1857 March qtr Volume 2a Page 277); she was born at Eynsford in 1837. David and Emma had at least three children – Lucy (1859) and twins William and Emma (1865). The 1861 census records that David (surnamed Alchin) was a woodman and he and his wife and their young daughter were living at St Paul Cray. The 1871 census records that David (surnamed Allchin) was a labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Church Lane, Chislehurst. The 1881 census records that David (surnamed Allchorne) was a game keeper and he and his wife and their three children were living at Chislehurst. The 1891 census records that David was a domestic gardener and he and his wife and their two spinster daughters were living at Suffolk Road, Chislehurst. There is no surviving record of David or his wife in the 1901 English census. David died in 1912 aged 83 years. Emma died in 1926 aged about 89 years. 1.7.2.1 ~~ Lucy Allchorne Lucy was born at St Mary Cray in 1859. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at St Paul Cray. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Church Lane, Chislehurst. The 1881 census records that Lucy was an unmarried dressmaker and she was still living with her parents at Chislehurst. The 1891 census records that Lucy was a dressmaker and she was still a spinster. She was living with her parents at Suffolk Road, Chislehurst. Lucy was deaf and it was probably the main reason she never married. William married Emily Mercer in 1888 (Greenwich 1888 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1270); she was born at Chislehurst in 1866. William and Emily had at least five children children – Henry (1889), Charles (1891), Frederick (1893), Winifred (1895) and Edith (1897). The 1891 census records that William (surnamed Alchin) was a plumber and he and his wife and their two young sons were living at 17 Victoria Road, Chislehurst. Ann married Jonathan Tylor (also Tiler or Tyler) at Shoreham on 8th July 1826; he was born at Canterbury in 1804 and he may have been the son of Richard Tylor (1767-1841). The wedding ceremony was performed by the Vicar Rev’d Robert Price and the witnesses were William and Ann Allchorne. Ann’s younger brother David married Mary Ann Cooper in the same ceremony. Jonathan and Ann had at least nine children – Jane (1827), Ann (1829), Sarah (1831), Eliza (1834), Richard (1836), Harriett (1839), Edna (1841), Edward (1845) and Jonathan (1847). The 1841 census records that Jonathan was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that Jonathan was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and six of their children were living at Shoreham. The 1861 census records that Jonathan was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife, two of their children and a grandson Jonathan E Tylor (he was born in London in 1853) were still living at Shoreham. Ann’s nephew Thomas Atkinson was visiting them at the time. Jonathan died in 1862 (Sevenoaks 1862 September qtr Volume 2a Page 228) aged 58 years and he was buried at Shoreham on 23rd September 1862. Ann died in 1869 (Sevenoaks 1869 September qtr Volume 2a Page 296) aged 62 years and she was buried at Shoreham on 23rd August 1869. 1.8.1 ~~ Jane Elizabeth Tylor Jane was born at Shoreham and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 1st April 1827. She must have gone into service at an early age as she was not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1841 census. There is a possibility that Jane or her younger sisters Ann or Sarah had a natural son who was born in London – Jonathan (1853). Jane married William Butler at Shoreham on 8th July 1854. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d J. Cameron and the witnesses were Solomon and Edna Savage. William was a 27 year old blacksmith of Shoreham and he was the son of Thomas Butler a papermaker. William and Jane had at least two children – Thomas (1855) and Sarah (1857). The baptism register records that William was a blacksmith of firstly Woolwich and then Shoreham. There is no record of either of this couple in any subsequent English census and they probably emigrated. 1.8.1.1 ~~ Jonathan Edward Tyler Jonathan was born at Lambeth in 1853 (Lambeth 1853 March qtr Volume 1d Page 256). The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his paternal grandparents at Shoreham. Jonathan married Ann Simmons in 1874 (Croydon 1874 June qtr Volume 2a Page 306); she was born at Bookham, Surrey in 1851. Jonathan and Ann had at least six children – Edna (1874), Harriett (1876), Emily (1878), Ruth (1882), Frances (1888) and Edward (1894). The 1881 census records that Jonathan was a varnish maker and he and his wife and their three young children were living at 10 Tribes Cottage, Homewood Terrace, Mitcham. The 1901 census records that Jonathan was a ‘black japan maker” (varnish maker) and he and his wife and their six children were living at 31 Homewood Road, Mitcham. 1.8.1.1.1 ~~ Edna Ann Tylor Edna was born at Mitcham in 1874 (Croydon 1874 December qtr Volume 2a Page 242). She was baptised at Shoreham on 17th January 1875. The 1881 census records that the school girl (incorrectly enumerated as Edwin) was living with her family at 10 Tribes Cottage, Homewood Terrace, Mitcham. He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 23rd September 1855. 1.8.1.3 ~~ Sarah Ann Jane Butler Sarah was born at Shoreham in 1857 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 31st May 1857. 1.8.2 ~~ Ann Tylor Ann was born at Shoreham in 1829 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 21st June 1829. The 1841 census records that Ann was living with her parents at Shoreham. Ann married Reuben G. Radburn in the early 1860’s; he was born at Clapham in 1831. Reuben and Ann had at least four children – Caroline (1861), Charles (1864), Arthur (1866) and Edward (1869). The 1871 census records that Reuben was a house painter and he and his wife and three of their children were living at 14 Union Street, Clapham. Reuben died in 1878 aged only 45 years (Wandsworth 1878 December qtr Volume 1d Page 389). The 1881 census records that Ann was a widowed laundress employing 5 workers. She and three of her children were living at 18 Union Street, Clapham. The 1891 census records that Ann was a retired laundress and she was visiting her sister Edna Rewman and her family at 131 Joydale Road, Camberwell. The 1901 census records that Ann was living on her own means and she and her daughter Caroline were living at 37 Manor Street, Clapham. 1.8.2.1 ~~ Caroline Radburn Caroline was born at Clapham in 1861 (Wandsworth 1861 September qtr Volume 1d Page 403). Caroline was not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1871 census and she must have been visiting relatives. The 1881 census records that Caroline was an unemployed servant and she was living with her widowed mother at 18 Union Street, Clapham. Caroline married Edward Charles Tibble in 1891 (Wandsworth 1891 March qtr Volume 1d Page 912). Edward and Caroline had at least three children – Constance (1891), Dorothy (1893) and Percival (1898). The 1901 census records that Caroline was still married but she was living with her widowed mother at 37 Manor Street, Clapham. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 39 Earlsfield Road, Wandsworth. 1.8.2.3 ~~ Arthur Radburn Arthur was born at Clapham in 1866 (Wandsworth 1866 June qtr Volume 1d Page 444). The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 14 Union Street, Clapham. The 1881 census records that Arthur was a cashier for Messers Moses and Sons, Merchant Tailors and he was living above their business at 83-89 Aldgate, St Botolph in London. Arthur married Louisa Skinner in 1889 (Wandsworth 1889 June qtr Volume 1d Page 1037); she was born at Bury St Edmunds in 1867. Arthur and Louisa had at least five children – Louisa (1889), Douglas (1891), Leonard (1894), Linda (1896) and Walter (1898). The 1891 census records that Arthur was an outfitter’s clerk and he and his wife and their two young children were living at 17 Union Street, Clapham. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 33 Manor Street, Clapham. 1.8.2.3.5 ~~ Walter Cecil Radburn Walter was born at Clapham in 1898 (Wandsworth 1898 September qtr Volume 1d Page 687). The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 14 Union Street, Clapham. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at 18 Union Street, Clapham. Edward married Jane Holland in 1891 (Wandsworth 1891 March qtr Volume 1d Page 911); she was born at Lambeth in 1872. 1.8.3 ~~ Sarah Tylor Sarah was born at Shoreham in either late 1831 or early 1832 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 5th February 1832. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Shoreham. Sarah married John Flemming at Shoreham on 8th July 1854 (her elder sister Jane was married in the same ceremony). The wedding was performed by Rev’d J. Cameron and the witnesses were William Henry Little and Jane Butler. William Flemming was floor cloth printer of Camberwell and he was born at Cork in Ireland, the son of John Flemming a labourer. John and Sarah had at least three children – Julia (1855), John (1857) and Richard (1861). The 1861 census records that John was a foreman and he and his wife and their two young children (with a third on the way) were living at 6 Gouldstone Cottages, Lovegrove Street, Camberwell. A few months later Sarah went home to her parents to have her baby. She probably died at Shoreham from complications arising from childbirth in 1861 aged 29 years. She and her new born son were buried at Shoreham on 1st September 1861. 1.8.3.1 ~~ Julia A. Flemming Julia was born at Camberwell in 1855. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 6 Gouldstone Cottages, Lovegrove Street, Camberwell. The 1871 census records that Julia was a servant for her uncle and aunt (J. and M. McCarthy) at 8 Victoria Place, Bermondsey. 1.8.3.2 ~~ John R. Flemming John was born at Camberwell in 1857. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 6 Gouldstone Cottages, Lovegrove Street, Camberwell. 1.8.3.3 ~~ Richard Flemming Richard was probably born at Shoreham in late August 1861. He and his mother both died soon afterwards and they were buried together at Shoreham on 1st September 1861. 1.8.4 ~~ Eliza Tylor Eliza was born at Shoreham in 1834 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 4th May 1834. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that Eliza was living with her parents at Shoreham. 1.8.5 ~~ Richard Tylor Richard was born at Shoreham in 1836 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 14th August 1836. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that Richard was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Shoreham. The 1861 census records that Richard was an unmarried Police Constable and he was living at the Police Station at 37-39 Lemon Street, Whitechapel. Richard was a witness at the wedding of his younger brother Edward in 1868. Richard married Mary Gallard in 1868 (Camberwell 1868 September qtr Volume 1d Page 831); she was born at Brighton in 1844 the daughter of Edwin and Mary Gallard. Richard and Mary had at least two children –George (1869) and Walter (1870). The 1871 census records that Richard was a beadle in the borough markets and he and his wife and two of their children were living at 2 Neckinger Road, Bermondsey. Richard died in London in 1874 (St Olave 1874 March qtr Volume 1d Page 152) aged 37 years and he was buried at Shoreham on 8th February 1874. 1.8.5.1 ~~ George E. Tylor George was born at Bermondsey in 1869. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 2 Neckinger Road, Bermondsey. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his maternal grandparents at 91 Cranham Road, Rotherhithe. 1.8.5.2 ~~ Walter Richard Tylor Walter was born at Bermondsey in December 1870 (St Olave 1870 December qtr Volume 1d Page 218). The 1871 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with his family at 2 Neckinger Road, Bermondsey. 1.8.6 ~~ Harriett Tylor Harriett was born at Shoreham in 1839 (Sevenoaks 1839 March qtr Volume 5 Page 400) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 21st April 1839. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham. 1.8.7 ~~ Edna Tylor Edna was born at Shoreham after the census in 1841 (Sevenoaks 1841 December qtr Volume 5 Page 384) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 25th December 1841. The 1851 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1861 census records that Edna was a house servant for John and Ellen Cross at 5 Cumberland Green, Camberwell. The 1881 census records that Edna was still a spinster. She was a house servant for Oscar and Minnie Rewman at 67 Rattray Road, Lambeth. Edna married Oscar Rewman later the same year (Lambeth 1881 December qtr Volume 1d Page 870); he was born in Berlin in Prussia in 1825. He had been previously married and he had at least one daughter – Minnie (1852). Oscar and Edna had at least one child – Elsie (1882). The 1891 census records that Oscar was an agent (shipping/insurance/house??) and he and his wife and his two daughters were living at 131 Joydale Road, Camberwell. Edna’s widowed sister Ann Radburn was visiting them at the time. 1.8.7.1 ~~ Elsie Rewman Elsie was born at Buxton, Surrey in 1882. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 131 Joydale Road, Camberwell. 1.8.8 ~~ Edward Medhurst Tylor Edward was born at Shoreham in 1844 (Sevenoaks 1844 June qtr Volume 5 Page 439) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 9th June 1844. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Shoreham. The 1861 census records that Edward was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Shoreham. Edward married Eleanor Whiffen at Shoreham on 7th May 1868 (Sevenoals 1868 June qtr Volume 2a Page 715); she was born at Sevenoaks in 1847, the daughter of George Whiffen a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d J. Cameron and the witnesses were Richard and Edna Tylor. Edward and Eleanor had at least five children – William (1869), Eleanor (1870), Lucy (1872), Edna (1875) and Albert (1882). The 1871 census records that Edward was a gardener and he and his wife and their infant daughter were living at Shoreham. Eleanor’s young brother Alfred Whiffen was also living with them. The 1881 census records that Edward was a gardener and he and his wife and their three children were living at Shoreham. Another of Eleanor’s younger brothers (Joseph Whiffen) was also living with them. The 1891 census records that Edward was the head gardener for Andrew and Mary Hitchens (a stockbroker) at Monks Hatch, Compton in Surrey. He and his wife and their two children were living on the grounds. Eleanor died in the 1890’s. The 1901 census records that Edward was a widowed gardener and he and his daughter and his wife’s widowed sister (Hannah Parry) were still living at Monks Hatch, Compton. 1.8.8.1 ~~ William Osborne Tylor William was born at Shoreham and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 1st August 1869. William died at Shoreham in early October 1869(Sevenoaks 1869 December qtr Volume 2a Page 301) aged just 3 months and he was buried at Shoreham on 6th October 1869. 1.8.8.2 ~~ Eleanor Tylor Eleanor was born at Shoreham in 1870 (Sevenoaks 1870 December qtr Volume 2a Page 493) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 20th November 1870. The 1871 census records that the 6 month old infant was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham. 1.8.8.3 ~~ Lucy Tylor Lucy was born at Shoreham in 1872 (Sevenoaks 1872 March qtr Volume 2a Page 535) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 8th January 1872. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1891 census records that Lucy was a dressmaker and she was living with her parents at Monks Hatch, Compton. The 1901 census records that Lucy was an unmarried dressmaker and she was living with her widowed father at Monks Hatch, Compton. 1.8.8.4 ~~ Edna Emma Rose Tylor Edna was born at Shoreham in 1875 (Sevenoaks 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 533) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 17th January 1875. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham. 1.8.8.5 ~~ Albert Edward M. Tylor Albert was born at Shoreham in 1882 (Sevenoaks 1882 June qtr Volume 2a Page 615). The 1891 census records that the school boy (named here as Edward) was living with his family at Monks Hatch, Compton. 1.8.9 ~~ Jonathan Tylor Jonathan was born at Shoreham in 1846 (Sevenoaks 1846 December qtr Volume 5 Page 479) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 25th October 1846. The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Shoreham. The 1861 census records that Jonathan was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Shoreham.
