1.5  ~~  Harriett Alchin

Harriett was born at Shoreham on 12th December 1797 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 25th December 1797. Harriett married Thomas Atkinson at Shoreham on 30th May 1819; he was born in about 1797. The wedding ceremony was performed by the Vicar, Rev’d Robert Price and the witnesses were Edmund and Maria Broomfield.

Thomas and Harriett had at least seven children – Harriett (1819), John (1821), William (1822), Jane (1824), Jesse (1827), Thomas (1829) and Mary (1835). The baptism register records that Thomas was a labourer of Shoreham.

Thomas died in 1835 aged about 38 years. Harriett subsequently had a liaison with John Joblin and bore him at least two children – John (1837) and Henry (1839). The children were baptised with the name Atkinson and at the time Harriett was a servant of Shoreham.

Harriett subsequently married John Joblin at St Mary’s church, Horton Kirby on 30th April 1841; he was born outside of Kent in 1809 and he was the son of Henry Joblin a boot maker. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d B.B. Fooks and the witnesses were William Gorridge and Maria Alchin.

The 1841 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and her five children were living next to her father and youngest brother at Shoreham. John Joblin died in 1850 aged 41 years and he was buried at Shoreham on 24th March 1850.

The 1851 census records that Harriett was a widowed charwoman and she and her four children were living at Shoreham still next door to her father and brother. Harriett died in 1860 aged 63 years and she was buried at Shoreham on 19th August 1860.

1.5.1  ~~  Harriett Atkinson

Harriett was born at Shoreham in 1819 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 5th December 1819. At the age of only 13 or 14 years Harriett had a natural child – Jesse (1833). At the time of the child’s baptism she was a servant girl of Shoreham.

1.5.1.1  ~~  Jesse Atkinson

Jesse was born at Shoreham in 1833 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 29th September 1833. Jesse died the following July aged about 1 year and he was buried at Shoreham on 19th July 1835.

1.5.2  ~~  John Atkinson

John was born at Shoreham in 1821 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 8th April 1821. John the following March aged about 1 year and he was buried at Shoreham on 23rd March 1822.

1.5.3  ~~  William John Atkinson

William was born at Shoreham in 1822 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 25th December 1822. The 1841 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his mother and step-father at Shoreham.

William married Clara Hills in 1848 (Sevenoaks 1848 June qtr Volume 5 Page 545); she was born at Shoreham in 1825 and she already had a daughter – Charlotte (1846). William and Clara had at least four more children – William (1848), John (1850), Jane (1852) and Thomas (1853).

The 1851 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three children were living at Mill Street, Shoreham. Clara died in 1860 aged 35 years and she was buried at Shoreham on 29th July 1860. There is no surviving trace of William or his children in the 1861 census.

The 1871 census records that William was a widowed gardener and he and his son were living at Crown Road, Shoreham. Also living with them were Mary Ann Eggleton his housekeeper (probably his widowed sister) who was born at Shoreham in 1825 and her son Henry Eggleton who was born at Shoreham in 1858.

The 1881 census records that William was a farm labourer and he and his house keeper (sister), Mary Eggleton, were living at Crown Road, Shoreham. The 1891 census records that William was a beerhouse keeper and he and his 16 year old granddaughter Lena Atkinson were living at ‘Lady Grey’ Main Road, Crayford.

William died in 1896 aged 74 years and he was buried at Shoreham on 27th November 1896.

1.5.3.1  ~~  Charlotte Atkinson

Charlotte was born at Shoreham in 1846 before her mother’s marriage. It is not known if William Atkinson was her father. The 1851 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Mill Street, Shoreham.

1.5.3.2  ~~  William Atkinson

William was born at Shoreham in 1848 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 27th August 1848. The 1851 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Mill Street, Shoreham.

In the 1860’s William joined the Metropolitan Police Force and he rose steadily through the ranks over the next 20 years eventually reaching the rank of Inspector. He married Annetta in about 1869; she was born at Burnham, Buckinghamshire in 1846.

William and Annetta had at least six children – Frances (1871), Clara (1873), Lena (1874), Frederick (1878), Albert (1881) and Harry (1882). The 1871 census records that William was a Police Constable and he and his wife and their baby daughter were living at Sutton in Surrey.

The 1881 census records that William was a Police Sergeant and he and his wife and their four children were living at 20 Oxenden Street, St Martin in the Fields in central London. The 1891 census records that William was a Police Inspector and he and his wife and three of their children were living at 3 Miles Buildings, Carlisle Street, Marylebone.

William retired from the Police in the 1890’s. The 1901 census records that he was a retired Police Inspector and he and his wife were living alone at 1 Oakford Road, St Pancras.

1.5.3.2.1  ~~  Frances Atkinson

Frances was born at Burnham in 1871. The 1871 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with her family at Sutton. She is not recorded with her family in the 1881 census.

1.5.3.2.2  ~~  Clara Maud Atkinson

Clara was born at Burnham in 1873 (Eton 1873 March qtr Volume 3a Page 509). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 20 Oxenden Street, St Martin in the Fields. Clara married in 1894 (Kensington 1894 September qtr Volume 1a Page 396a).

1.5.3.2.3  ~~  Lena Amelia Atkinson

Lena was born at Sutton in Surrey in 1874. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 20 Oxenden Street, St Martin in the Fields. The 1891 census records that Lena was the housekeeper for her grandfather William Atkinson at ‘Lady Grey’, Main Road, Crayford.

1.5.3.2.4  ~~  Frederick Charles Atkinson

Frederick was born at St Martin in the Fields, London in 1878. The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at 20 Oxenden Street, St Martin in the Fields. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 3 Miles Buildings, Carlisle Street, Marylebone.

1.5.3.2.5  ~~  Albert Barnet Atkinson

Albert was born at St Martin in the Fields, London in February 1881 (Strand 1881 March qtr Volume 1b Page 689). The 1881 census records that the 2 month old infant was living with his family at 20 Oxenden Street, St Martin in the Fields.

The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 3 Miles Buildings, Carlisle Street, Marylebone. There is a record of a Albert Barnet Atkinson dying in 1905 aged ‘30’ years.

1.5.3.2.6  ~~  Harry Atkinson

Harry was born at St Martin in the Fields, London in 1882. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 3 Miles Buildings, Carlisle Street, Marylebone.

1.5.3.3  ~~  John Atkinson

John was born at Shoreham in late 1850 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 1st December 1850. The 1851 census records that the 5 month old infant was living with his family at Mill Street, Shoreham. The 1871 census records that John was an under-gardener and he was living with his widowed father at Crown Road, Shoreham.

John married Louisa Beatrip in 1874 (Sevenoaks 1974 December qtr Volume 2a Page 871); she was born at Bexley in 1851. John and Louisa had at least nine children – Mary (1877), twins Kate and Albert (1878), Louisa (1880), Clara (1882), William (1884), John (1885), Nellie (1889) and Florence (1892).

The 1881 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their three young children were living at Street Cottage, Shoreham. The 1891 census records that John was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their six children were living at The Street, Shoreham.

The 1901 census records that John was a teamster on a farm and he and his wife and three of their children were living at Shoreham. Two of their other children were visiting their eldest sister. John was still alive as late as 1919 when he was a witness at the wedding of his youngest daughter Florence.

Louisa died at 3 Crown Street, Shoreham in 1932 aged 79 years and she was buried at Shoreham on 10th June 1932.

1.5.3.3.1  ~~  Mary Jane Atkinson

Mary was born at Shoreham in 1877 (Sevenoaks 1877 June qtr Volume 2a Page 540) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 1st July 1877. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1891 census records that Mary was living with her parents at The Street, Shoreham.

Mary had a liaison with an unknown man (possibly George Atkinson) and had a natural child by him – Harold (1900). The 1901 census records that Mary was a housekeeper (for the father of her child perhaps) and she and her son were living at Shoreham. Her brother and sister were visiting her at the time.

1.5.3.3.1.1  ~~  Harold Charles Frank Atkinson

Harold was born at Shoreham on 30th July 1900. He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 2nd September 1900. The baptism register records that his father George Atkinson was a labourer of Shoreham. The 1901 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with his mother at Shoreham.

1.5.3.3.2  ~~  Kate Atkinson

Kate and her twin brother Albert were born at Shoreham in 1878 (Sevenoaks 1878 September qtr Volume 2a Page 577). She is not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1881 census and it is likely that she died in infancy.

1.5.3.3.3   ~~  Albert George Atkinson

Albert and his twin sister Kate were born at Shoreham in 1878 (Sevenoaks 1878 September qtr Volume 2a Page 578). The 1880 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Shoreham. Albert died tragically when he drowned at the age of 2 years and 10 months and he was buried at Shoreham on 30th May 1882. His younger sister Louisa drowned in 1891.

1.5.3.3.4   ~~  Louisa Atkinson

Louisa was born at Shoreham in August 1880 (Sevenoaks 1880 September qtr Volume 2a Page 590). The 1880 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1881 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with her family at Street Cottage, Shoreham.

The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at The Street, Shoreham. Tragically Louisa drowned in the river several months later aged only 10 years and she was buried at Shoreham on 9th November 1891.

1.5.3.3.5  ~~  Clara Maria Atkinson

Clara was born at Shoreham in 1882 (Sevenoaks 1882 September qtr Volume 2a Page 619). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at The Street, Shoreham. The 1901 census records that Clara was living with her parents at Shoreham.

1.5.3.3.6  ~~  William James Atkinson

William was born at Shoreham in 1884 (Sevenoaks 1884 March qtr Volume 2a Page 642). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at The Street, Shoreham. The 1901 census records that William was a horse-man on a farm and he was living with his parents at Shoreham.

William married Margaret and they had at least one child – Alma (1910). At the time of the baby’s baptism William was a railway porter of Shoreham.

Alma was born at Shoreham in 1910 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 4th December 1910.

1.5.3.3.7  ~~  John Thomas Atkinson

John was born at Shoreham in 1885 (Sevenoaks 1885 December qtr Volume 2a Page 643). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at The Street, Shoreham. The 1901 census records that John was a stock-man on a farm and he was visiting his eldest sister at Shoreham.

1.5.3.3.8  ~~  Nellie Atkinson

Nellie was born at Shoreham on 11th March 1889 (Sevenoaks 1889 June qtr Volume 2a Page 638). She and her sister Florence were baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 7th August 1892. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at The Street, Shoreham. The 1901 census records that the school girl was visiting her eldest sister at Shoreham.

Nellie had a natural born child – Nellie (1909). At the time Nellie was a single woman of 5 Mill Lane, Shoreham.

1.5.3.3.8.1  ~~  Nellie Louisa Atkinson

Nellie was born at Shoreham in 1909 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 7th February 1909.

1.5.3.3.9   ~~  Florence Mary Atkinson

Florence was born at Shoreham on 25th June 1892 (Sevenoaks 1892 September qtr Volume 2a Page 681). She and her sister Nellie were baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 7th August 1892. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham.

Florence married George Manville at Shoreham on 24th May 1919. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d H.D. Mady and the witnesses were George Peacock and John Atkinson. George was a 22 year old farm labourer of Well Hill, Shoreham the son of James Manville who was also a labourer.

1.5.3.4  ~~  Jane Atkinson

Jane was born at Shoreham in May 1852 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 17th May 1852. Jane died within a fortnight and she was buried at Shoreham on 30th May 1852.

1.5.3.5  ~~  Thomas Atkinson

Thomas was born at Shoreham and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 31st July 1853. Like the rest of his family the young boy was not recorded in the 1861 census and Thomas was also not recorded with his father in the 1871 census.

Thomas married Harriett Groombridge at Shoreham on 2nd July 1876. At the time of his marriage Thomas was a labourer of Shoreham. Harriett was born in 1853 and she was the daughter of Thomas Groombridge a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d John Creagh and the witnesses were Edward Osborne and Jane Foreman.

1.5.4  ~~  Jane Atkinson

Jane was born at Shoreham in 1824 and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 10th October 1824. Jane died of smallpox in 1830 aged just 5 years and she was buried at Shoreham on 16th July 1830.

1.5.5  ~~  Jesse Atkinson

Jesse was born at Shoreham in 1827 and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 7th January 1827. Jesse died in 1829 aged 2 years and he was buried at Shoreham on 27th February 1829.

1.5.6  ~~  Thomas Atkinson

Thomas was born at Shoreham in 1829 and he and his cousin David Alchorne were baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 15th February 1829. The 1841 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his mother and step-father at Shoreham.

The 1851 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his widowed mother at Shoreham. The 1861 census records that Thomas was an unmarried agricultural labourer and he was visiting his uncle and aunt (Jonathan and Ann Tylor) at Shoreham.

Thomas married Martha Golding at Shoreham on 5th July 1862 (Sevenoaks 1862 September qtr Volume 2a Page 665); she was born at Swanley in 1841 the daughter of William Golding, a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d J. Cameron and the witnesses were Emily Cheeseman and Thomas Medhurst.

Thomas and Martha had at least nine children – Valentine (1863), Harriett (1864), Phillis (1865), John (1867), Henry (1870), Sarah (1872), Florence (1875), Eliza (1877) and Thomas (1880). The 1871 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their five children were living at Williamson’s Cottages, Eynsford.

The 1881 census records that Thomas was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their eight children were living at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford. There is no sign of Thomas or his family in the 1891 English census.

The 1901 census records that Thomas had no occupation and he and his wife and their two unmarried sons were living at Bower Lane, Eynsford.

1.5.6.1  ~~  Valentine William Atkinson

Valentine was born at Shoreham in 1863 (Sevenoaks 1863 March qtr Volume 2a Page 447). He was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on Whitsunday 24th May 1863. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Williamson’s Cottages, Eynsford.

Valentine joined the army in about 1880 but it is not known at this stage how long he remained there. The 1881 census records that Valentine (William) was a Private in the Infantry at Hougham, Kent.  Probably after his discharge from the army Valentine married Annie Groombridge in 1888 (Dartford 1888 June qtr Volume 2a Page 696); she was born at Shoreham in 1868.

Valentine and Annie had at least six children – William (1889), Florence and Winifred (1892), Thomas (1894), Christiana (1896) and Annie (1899). The 1891 census records that Valentine (William) was a porter for the L.C. & O Railway and he and his wife and their infant son were living at 5 Richard Street, Rochester. Annie’s younger sister Ellen (born in 1875) was also living with them.

The 1901 census records that Valentine was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their six children were living at Bower Lane, Eynsford.

William was born at Eynsford in 1889. The 1891 census records that the infant was living with his family at 5 Richard Street, Rochester. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Bower Lane, Eynsford.

Florence and her twin sister Winifred were born at Rochester in 1892. The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Bower Lane, Eynsford.

Harriett was born at Shoreham in 1864 (Sevenoaks 1864 June qtr Volume 2a Page 428). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Williamson’s Cottages, Eynsford. The 1881 census records that Harriett was living with her parents at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford.

1.5.6.3  ~~  Phillis Atkinson

Phillis was born at Sutton at Hone in 1865 (Sevenoaks 1865 September qtr Volume 2a Page 306). The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Williamson’s Cottages, Eynsford. The 1881 census records that Phillis was a domestic servant and she was living with her parents at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford.

Phillis probably married Arthur Cook or Charles James Hodges in 1890 (Dartford 1890 June qtr Volume 2a Page 797).

1.5.6.4  ~~  John Atkinson

John was born at Sutton at Hone in 1867. The 1871 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Williamson’s Cottages, Eynsford. The 1881 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford.

1.5.6.5  ~~  Henry Atkinson

Henry was born at Eynsford in 1870 (Dartford 1870 June qtr Volume 2a Page 375). The 1871 census records that the 11 month old infant was living with his family at Williamson’s Cottages, Eynsford. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford.

The 1901 census records that Henry was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Bower Lane, Eynsford.

1.5.6.6  ~~  Sarah Atkinson

Sarah was born at Eynsford in 1872. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford. The 1891 census records that Sarah was a cook and she and her sister Florence were working for Philip and Sarah Ladds at Station Road, Meopham.

1.5.6.7  ~~  Florence Atkinson

Florence was born at Eynsford in 1875 (Dartford 1875 March qtr Volume 2a Page 404). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford. The 1891 census records that Florence was a house maid and she and her sister Sarah were working for Philip and Sarah Ladds at Station Road, Meopham.

The 1901 census records that Florence was an unmarried servant and she was working for Thomas and Charlotte Crossley at 68 Tweedy Road, Bromley.

1.5.6.8  ~~  Eliza Atkinson

Eliza was born at Eynsford in 1877 (Dartford 1877 March qtr Volume 2a Page 446). The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford.

1.5.6.9  ~~  Thomas Atkinson

Thomas was born at Eynsford in 1880 (Dartford 1880 September qtr Volume 2a Page 457).  The 1881 census records that the 8 month old infant was living with his family at 9 Church Row, High Street, Eynsford. The 1901 census records that Thomas was an unmarried farm labourer and he was living with his parents at Bower Lane, Eynsford.

1.5.7  ~~  Mary Jane Atkinson

Mary was born at Shoreham in 1835 but there is no surviving record of her baptism. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that Mary was at home with her widowed mother at Shoreham.

Mary probably married John Edginton (there is no record of their marriage at Shoreham which is surprising as both were born in the parish); he was born at Shoreham in 1828 the son of William and Hannah Edginton. John was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 4th May 1828 and at the time of his birth his father was a papermaker of Shoreham.

John and Mary had at least six children – John (1854), Mary (1856), Henry (1857), William (1859), Thomas (1862) and Theresa (1864). The parish register records that John was a cordwainer of Shoreham.

The 1861 census records that John was a boot maker and he and his wife and their three surviving children were living at Shoreham. Mary’s two younger half-brothers (John and Henry Joblin) were also living with them. John must have died in the 1860’s or perhaps he and his wife separated.

The 1871 census records that Mary was the housekeeper (interestingly she is recorded in the 1871 and 1881 census as single and not widowed) for her brother William Atkinson at Crown Road, Shoreham. Her son Henry was also living with her.

The 1881 census records that Mary was still the housekeeper for her brother William at Crown Road, Shoreham. She was not living with him at the time of the 1891 census.

John was born at Shoreham and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 30th September 1854. The 1861 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Shoreham.

1.5.7.2  ~~  Mary Jane Edginton

Mary was born at Shoreham and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 17th February 1856. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Shoreham.

1.5.7.3  ~~  Henry Joblin Edginton

Henry was born at Shoreham in 1857 (Sevenoaks 1857 June qtr Volume 2a Page 337) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 10th May 1857. The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Shoreham. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his mother and uncle at Crown Road, Shoreham.

1.5.7.4  ~~  William Roe Edginton

William was born at Shoreham in 1859 (Sevenoaks 1859 June qtr Volume 2a Page 369) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 26th June 1859. William died in 1860 aged about 1 year (Sevenoaks 1860 June qtr Volume 2a Page 254). He was buried at Shoreham on 6th May 1860.

1.5.7.5  ~~  Thomas Edginton

Thomas was born at Shoreham in late 1862 (Sevenoaks 1862 December qtr Volume 2a Page 41*) and he was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 1st March 1863.

1.5.7.6  ~~  Theresa Harriett Pym Edginton

Theresa was born at Shoreham in 1864 (Sevenoaks 1864 September qtr Volume 2a Page 434) and she was baptised at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 19th February 1865.

1.5.8  ~~  John Joblin

John was born at Shoreham in 1837 and he was baptised as John Joveling Atkins(on) at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 21st May 1837. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that John was living with his widowed mother at Shoreham.

The 1861 census records that John was a railway labourer and he was living with his married sister Mary Edginton at Shoreham. John never married. The 1901 census records that John was an unmarried agricultural labourer who had fallen on hard times. He was an inmate of the Sundridge Workhouse.

1.5.9  ~~  Henry Joblin

Henry was born at Shoreham in 1839 and he was baptised at Henry Joveling Atkinson at the church of St Peter and St Paul, Shoreham on 21st April 1839. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Shoreham. The 1851 census records that the school boy was living with his widowed mother at Shoreham.

The 1861 census records that Henry was an unmarried railway labourer and he was living with his married sister Mary Edginton at Shoreham. Henry died at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in 1869 aged 30 years and he was buried at Shoreham on 27th July 1869.
