Part 1d – The Descendants of William Alchorne and Jane Booker of Shoreham ...continued... 1.4.5 ~~ Jesse Alchin Jesse was born at Horton Kirby in late 1828 and he was baptised at St Mary’s church, Horton Kirby on 18th January 1829. The 1841 census records that Jesse was living with his parents at Horton Kirby. There is no further record of Jesse in England and it seems likely that he either died (and his death was not registered) or else he emigrated (but not to America, Canada or Australia). 1.4.6 ~~ Maria Alchin Maria was born at Horton Kirby in 1831 and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, Horton Kirby on 14th August 1831. The 1841 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Horton Kirby. At the time of her marriage in 1848 Maria was a servant of Northfleet. Maria married William Hollands at Northfleet on 23rd July 1848 (Aylesford 1848 September qtr Volume 5 Page 494); he was born at Ridley (between Kingsdown and Meopham) in 1824, the son of Thomas Hollands a labourer. The wedding ceremony was performed by Rev’d Samuel Fulton and the witnesses were Mary Alchin and John Booker. William and Maria had at least eight children – Sophia (1849), Jesse (1851), Kesiah (1853), Harriett (1855), William (1859), Alfred (1861), Maria (1867) and Charlotte (1869). William and his family are not recorded in the 1851 census. The 1861 census records that William was a farm labourer and he and his wife and their five children were living at Little Barnshatch House, Kingsdown. William’s younger sister Kesiah was also living with them. The 1871 census records that William ran a beer house and he and his wife and six of their children were living at Barnshatch Lane, Kingsdown. The 1881 census records that William ran a beer house called “The Woodsman” and he and his wife, three of their children and a granddaughter were living at Fawkham Road, Kingsdown. The 1891 census records that William was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their 11 year old granddaughter Hilda Young were living at St George’s Cottages, Longfield (near Dartford). The 1901 census records that William was a wood cutter at the age of 76 years and he and his wife were living alone at White Hill, Longfield. 1.4.6.1 ~~ Sophia Hollands Sophia was born at Fawkham in 1849 (Dartford 1849 June qtr Volume 5 Page 10*). The 1871 census records that Jesse was a labourer and he was living with his parents at Barnshatch Lane, Kingsdown. Jesse married Mary A; she was born at Kemsing in 1848. Jesse and Mary had at least five children – Walter (1873), George (1875), Maria (1881), Laura (1883) and Jesse (1885). Jesse and his family are not recorded in the 1881 census. The 1891 census records that Jesse was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and their five children were living at Fawkham Green. The 1901 census records that Jesse was a farm labourer and he and his wife, three of their children and a 9 year old grandson (Harry Waresh?) were still living at Fawkham Green. 1.4.6.2.1 ~~ Walter Henry Hollands Walter was born at Fawkham in 1873. The 1891 census records that Walter was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Fawkham Green. 1.4.6.2.2 ~~ George William Hollands George was born at Fawkham in 1875. The 1891 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Fawkham Green. The 1901 census records that George was an unmarried agricultural labourer and he was living with his parents at Fawkham Green. 1.4.6.2.3 ~~ Maria Hollands Maria was born at Fawkham in 1881. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Fawkham Green. The 1901 census records that Maria was unmarried and she was living with her parents at Fawkham Green. 1.4.6.2.4 ~~ Laura Hollands Laura was born at Fawkham in 1883. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Fawkham Green. 1.4.6.2.5 ~~ Jesse Hollands Jesse was born at Fawkham in 1885. The 1861 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Little Barnshatch House, Kingsdown. She was not recorded with the rest of her family in the 1871 census by which time she had probably gone into service. Kesiah married George Young; he was born at Dartford in 1851. George and Kesiah had at least four children – Charles (1873), Ellen (1875), Maud (1877) and Hilda (1879). The 1881 census records that George was a butcher’s manager and he and his wife and their four children were living at 345 Battersea Road, Battersea. George died in the 1880’s. The 1891 census records that Kesiah was a widowed laundress and she and her daughter Maud were living at Hartley Green. 1.4.6.3.1 ~~ Charles Young Charles was born at Dartford in 1873. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 345 Battersea Road, Battersea. 1.4.6.3.2 ~~ Ellen H. Young Ellen was born at Dartford in 1875. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at 345 Battersea Road, Battersea. However she was also recorded living with her grandparents at Fawkham Road, Kingsdown. 1.4.6.3.3 ~~ Maud Young Maud was born at Maidstone in 1877. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 345 Battersea Road, Battersea. The 1891 census records that Maud was living with her widowed mother at Hartley Green. 1.4.6.3.4 ~~ Hilda Young Hilda was born at Lambeth in 1879. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 345 Battersea Road, Battersea. The 1881 census records that Alfred was an unemployed blacksmith and he was living with his parents at Fawkham Road, Kingsdown. Alfred married Eliza Ann Simpkins; she was born at Swanley near Sutton at Hone in 1862. Alfred and Eliza had at least seven children – William (1884), Nellie (1886), Alec (1888), Percy (1891), Archie (1894), Mabel (1897) and Vincent (1899). The 1891 census records that Alfred was a game keeper and he and his wife and their four children were living at Court Lodge, Stansted. Eliza’s mother Ann Elizabeth Simpkins was living with them at the time. This was probably because her daughter had only recently had her fourth child. The 1901 census records that Alfred was still a gamekeeper and he and his wife and their seven children were living in the Keeper’s Cottage at Wrotham Hill. 1.4.6.6.1 ~~ William James Hollands William was born at Hartley in 1884 (Dartford 1884 September qtr Volume 2a Page 475). The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Court Lodge, Stansted. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Court Lodge, Stansted. In 1841 the Alchin family’s neighbours were the Plumb family which had a number of boys around Frances’ age including her future husband. The 1851 census records that Frances worked in a paper factory and she was living with her parents at Lumber Street, Horton Kirby. Frances married James Plum / Plumb; he was born at Horton Kirby in 1830 and he was the son of William and Rebecca Plumb. James and Frances had at least two children – Frances (1854) and Frank (1857). John married Emma Booker in 1856 (Greenwich 1856 September qtr Volume 1d Page 218); she was born at Eynsford in 1835 and she may have been his cousin. John and Emma had at least eight children – Anne (1858), Jesse (1860), William (1862), Alfred (1864), Edith (1867), John (1868), Ada (1872) and Emma (1877). The 1861 census records that John was a labourer and he and his wife and their two eldest children were living at 6 Sharpes Row, Horton Kirby. The 1871 census records that John was an agricultural labourer and he and his wife, their five children and his widowed mother were living at Horton Kirby. The 1881 census records that John was working as an agricultural labourer and he and his wife and five of their children were living at Horton Kirby. John may have died in 1889 aged 52 years (recorded in St Catherine House index as 62 years old) (Dartford 1889 June qtr Volume 2a Page 252). The 1891 census records that Emma was a widowed laundress and she and three of her children were living at Lombard Street, Horton Kirby. The 1901 census records that Emma was living with the family of her married daughter Emma Acton at New Road, Horton Kirby. The 1881 census records that George was a fire lighter for the South East Railways and he and his newly wed wife were living at Charlotte Street, Camberwell. The 1891 census records that George was an engine driver and he and his wife and their three children were living at 5 Fort Road, Bermondsey. The 1901 census records that William was employed as a stoker in a paper mill. He and his wife and six of their children were living at 7 St Johns Terrace, Sutton at Hone. Elizabeth probably died in 1906 aged only 43 years (Dartford 1906 September qtr Volume 2a Page 375). William probably died in 1941 aged 79 years (Bermondsey 1941 March qtr Volume 1d Page 128). 1.4.8.3.1 ~~ Blanche Priscilla Alchin Blanche was born at Horton Kirby in 1885 (Dartford 1885 June qtr Volume 2a Page 444). The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Main Street, Horton Kirby. The 1901 census records that Blanche was a domestic servant for Bertram Noakes and his five elderly spinster sisters at Brockley Hall, Lewisham. Blanche probably married in 1909 (Dartford 1909 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1115). 1.4.8.3.2 ~~ William Jesse Alchin William was born at Horton Kirby on 11th February 1887 (Dartford 1887 March qtr Volume 2a Page 481). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Main Street, Horton Kirby. The 1901 census records that William was employed as a labourer in a paper mill and he was living with his parents at 7 St Johns Terrace, Sutton at Hone. William married in 1910 (Grimsby 1910 March qtr Volume 7a Page 1205). He was a merchant seaman during World War One (304834). William died in 1980 aged 93 years (Chatham 1980 December qtr Volume 16 Page 645). 1.4.8.3.3 ~~ Philip Noble F. Alchin Philip was born at Horton Kirby in 1888 (Dartford 1888 December qtr Volume 2a Page 489). The 1891 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Main Street, Horton Kirby. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 7 St Johns Terrace, Sutton at Hone. Philip married a woman surnamed Symons in 1912 (Marylebone 1912 March qtr Volume 1a Page 921). Philip died in 1956 aged 68 years (Westminster 1956 December qtr Volume 5c Page 383). 1.4.8.3.4 ~~ Ruth Alchin Ruth was born at Horton Kirby in 1891 (Dartford 1891 March qtr Volume 2a Page 530). The 1901 census records that the school girl was staying with her uncle and aunt (William and Ann White) at 125 New City Road, Plaistow. Ruth probably married Ronald H. Alfred married Caroline Ellen Humphrey in 1899 (Dartford 1899 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1101); she was born at Horton Kirby in 1876. Alfred and Caroline had at least one child – Alfred (1900). The 1901 census records that Alfred was working as a farm labourer and he and his young family were living at New Road, Horton Kirby. 1.4.8.4.1 ~~ Alfred Ernest Alchin Alfred was born at South Darenth in 1900 (Dartford 1900 March qtr Volume 2a Page 576). The 1901 census records that the toddler was living with his family at New Road, Horton Kirby. Alfred married Kathleen B. Crawley in 1920 (Dartford 1920 December qtr Volume 2a Page 1525). 1.4.8.5 ~~ Edith Alchin Edith was born at Horton Kirby in 1867 (Dartford 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 355) and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, Horton Kirby on 6th March 1867. Edith died almost straight away (Dartford 1867 March qtr Volume 2a Page 225). 1.4.8.6 ~~ John Alchorne Alchin John was born at Horton Kirby in 1868 (Dartford 1868 June qtr Volume 2a Page 377) and he was baptised at St Mary’s church, Horton Kirby on 4th April 1868. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Horton Kirby. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Horton Kirby. The 1891 census records that John was an unmarried bricklayer’s labourer and he was living with his widowed mother at Lombard Street, Horton Kirby. John married Fanny Hannah Woollett in 1894 (Gravesend 1894 September qtr Volume 2a Page 941); she was born at Gravesend in 1868. John and Fanny had at least two children – Stephen (1894) and Ada (1897). The 1901 census records that John was employed as a grocer’s assistant. He and his wife and their two children were living at 10 Spencer Street, Gravesend. John died in 1922 aged 54 years (Gravesend 1922 September qtr Volume 2a Page 599). Fanny moved to Sussex with her children. She died in 1952 aged 84 years (Eastbourne 1952 June qtr Volume 5h Page 198). 1.4.8.6.1 ~~ Stephen John A. Alchin Stephen was born at Gravesend on 21st December 1894 (Gravesend 1895 March qtr Volume 2a Page 543). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at 10 Spencer Street, Gravesend. Stephen was a merchant seaman during World War One (M20103). Stephen died in 1948 aged 53 years (Eastbourne 1948 March qtr Volume 5h Page 229). 1.4.8.6.2 ~~ Ada Doris Alchin Ada was born at Gravesend in 1897 (Gravesend 1897 June qtr Volume 2a Page 515). The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at 10 Spencer Street, Gravesend. Ada never married. She died in 1970 aged 73 years (Eastbourne 1970 June qtr Volume 5h Page 846). 1.4.8.7 ~~ Ada Emma Alchin Ada was born at Horton Kirby in 1872 (Dartford 1872 March qtr Volume 2a Page 415) and she was baptised at St Mary’s church, Horton Kirby on 5th May 1872. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Horton Kirby. The 1891 census records that Ada was an unmarried housemaid at South Park House, Wadhurst in Sussex. Ada married Samuel Benjamin Suckling in 1898 (Dartford 1898 June qtr Volume 2a Page 1047); he was born in Ireland in 1871. The 1901 census records that Samuel was a warehouseman for a paper company and Ada was a caretaker. They had no children living with them and they were living at 24 Great Cumberland Place, Marylebone. 1.4.8.8 ~~ Emma Edith Alchin Emma was born at Horton Kirby in 1877 (Dartford 1877 March qtr Volume 2a Page 446). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Horton Kirby. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her widowed mother at Lombard Street, Horton Kirby. Emma married Thomas James Acton in 1895 (St Olave 1895 September qtr Volume 1d Page 491); he was born at Horton Kirby in 1873 the son of Thomas Acton a wheelwright of South Darenth and his wife Anna. Thomas was baptised at St Mary’s church, Horton Kirby on 1st December 1872. Thomas and Emma had at least two children – Osmund (1896) and Cyril (1901). The 1901 census records that Thomas was employed as a cutterman in a paper mill and he and his wife and their two children were living at New Road, Horton Kirby. Thomas’ widowed mother in law Emma Alchin was also living with them. 1.4.8.8.1 ~~ Osmund Thomas Acton Osmund was born at Horton Kirby in 1896 (Dartford 1896 March qtr Volume 2a Page 510). The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at New Road, Horton Kirby. 1.4.8.8.2 ~~ Cyril James R. Acton Cyril was born at Horton Kirby in late 1900 or early 1901 (Dartford 1901 March qtr Volume 2a Page 580). The 1901 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with his family at New Road, Horton Kirby. |
