The 1861 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Rotherfield. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that William was still a bachelor. He was farming 100 acres (probably the land belonged to his elderly uncle William Allcorn) and he was living with his parents at Stone House, Rotherfield. William married Ellen Eade Feldwick in 1892 (Uckfield 1892 June qtr Volume 2b Page 227); she was born at Buxted in 1865. William and Ellen had at least five children - Lillian (1892), Archibald (1894), Beatrice (1897), Fred (1898) and Delcy (1901). The 1901 census records that William was a farmer and he and his wife and their five young children were living at Stitches Farm, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.2.1 ~~ Lillian Ellen Hyder Lillian was born at Crowhurst in 1892 (East Grinstead 1892 December qtr Volume 2b Page 133). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Stitches Farm, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.2.2 ~~ Archibald William Hyder Archibald was born at Crowhurst in 1894 (East Grinstead 1894 March qtr Volume 2b Page 152). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Stitches Farm, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.2.3 ~~ Beatrice Daisy Hyder Beatrice (also known as Daisy) was born at Buxted in 1897 (Uckfield 1897 March qtr Volume 2b Page 138). The 1901 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Stitches Farm, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.2.5 ~~ Delcy Violet Hyder Delcy was born at Rotherfield in March 1901 (Uckfield 1901 March qtr Volume 2b Page 121). The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Stitches Farm, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.3 ~~ Edith Hyder Edith was born at Rotherfield in December 1860 (Uckfield 1860 December qtr Volume 2b Page 86) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 24th March 1861. The 1861 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with her family at Rotherfield. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that Edith was unmarried and she was still living with her parents at Stone House, Rotherfield. Edith married Henry Fuller in 1892 (Lewes 1892 December qtr Volume 2b Page 396); he was born at Fletching in 1864. Henry and Edith had at least four children - Louie (1894), Lilian (1896), Katherine (1898) and Harry (1901). The 1901 census records that Henry was a foreman bricklayer and he and his wife, their four young children and his widowed step-mother were living at Preywood, East Hoathley. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.3.1 ~~ Louie Edith Fuller Louie was born at Newick in 1894 (Lewes 1894 June qtr Volume 2b Page 177). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Preywood, East Hoathley. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.3.2 ~~ Lilian Beatrice Fuller Lilian was born at Newick in 1895 (Lewes 1895 September qtr Volume 2b Page 177). The 1901 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Preywood, East Hoathley. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.3.3 ~~ Katherine Joan Fuller Katherine was born at Fletching in 1897 (Uckfield 1897 September qtr Volume 2b Page 128). The 1901 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Preywood, East Hoathley. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.3.4 ~~ Harry George Fuller Harry was born at East Hoathley in March 1901 (Uckfield 1901 March qtr Volume 2b Page 126). The 1901 census records that the 1 month old infant was living with his family at Preywood, East Hoathley. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.4 ~~ Ansley Hyder Ansley was born at Rotherfield in early 1862 (Uckfield 1862 March qtr Volume 2b Page 90). Ansley died almost straight away (Uckfield 1862 March qtr Volume 2b Page 55). 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.5 ~~ Albert Edwin Hyder Albert was born at Rotherfield in 1864 (Uckfield 1864 March qtr Volume 2b Page 98) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 13th March 1864. The 1871 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that Albert (no occupation is listed for him) was living with his parents at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Albert (here called Edwin) was an unmarried farmer and he was living with his widowed mother on their farm at Hattrells House, Fletching. Albert died at Fletching on 22nd October 1941 aged 77 years. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.6 ~~ Delcy Ansley Hyder Delcy was born at Rotherfield in 1866 (Uckfield 1866 September qtr Volume 2b Page 92) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 14th October 1866. The 1871 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Stone House, Rotherfield. Delcy died in 1884 aged only 18 years (Uckfield 1884 September qtr Volume 2b Page 73). She was buried at Rotherfield on 7th August 1884. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.7 ~~ Ernest Hyder Ernest and his twin brother Arthur were born at Rotherfield on 30th July 1871 (Uckfield 1871 September qtr Volume 2b Page 101) and they were baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 21st September 1871. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Ernest was living with his widowed mother at Hattrells House, Fletching. Ernest died at Fletching on 18th September 1960 aged 89 years. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.8 ~~ Arthur Archibald Hyder Arthur and his twin brother Ernest were born at Rotherfield on 30th July 1871 (Uckfield 1871 September qtr Volume 2b Page 101) and they were baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 21st September 1871. The 1881 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Stone House, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.9 ~~ Louie Alice Hyder Louie was born at Rotherfield on 13th June 1874 (Uckfield 1874 September qtr Volume 2b Page 104) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 24th August 1874. The 1881 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Louie was unmarried and she was living with her widowed mother at Halletts House, Fletching. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.2.10 ~~ Lillian B. Hyder Lillian was born at Rotherfield in 1877 (Uckfield 1877 June qtr Volume 2b Page 104). The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Stone House, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Lillian was unmarried and she was living with her widowed mother at Halletts House, Fletching. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3 ~~ George Hider George was born at Rotherfield in 1834 and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 15th June 1834. The 1841 census records that the young boy was living with his widowed mother at Rotherfield. The 1851 census records that George was an agricultural labourer and he was living with his grandmother and other members of his extended family at The Hall, Rotherfield. George married his cousin Ellen Allcorn at Holy Trinity church, Tunbridge Wells on 14th June 1858 Tonbridge 1858 June qtr Volume 2a Page 569); she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 9th March 1834 and she was the daughter of George and Sophia Allcorn. George and Ellen Hyder had at least nine children - Charlotte (1858), Ellen (1860), Anna (1862), Emily (1864), William (1865), Albert (1867), Percy (1868), Eva (1870) and May (1872). The 1861 census records that George was farming 151 acres and employing 3 labourers and 4 boys. He and his wife and their two young daughters were living at Scrags Cross, Rotherfield. The 1871 census records that George was a farmer of 240 acres employing 9 men and 1 boy. He and his wife and their eight children were living with a number of servants at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield. The 1881 census records that George was farmer and landlord and he and his wife and seven of their children were living at Warren Farm, Rotherfield. The family appears to have fallen on hard times in the 1880’s. The 1891 census records that George was a vestry clerk and he and his wife, their son and grand daughter (Ivy Louisa Harman) were living at Maynard’s Gate, Rotherfield. His sons by then were working in menial occupations. George died in 1893 aged 59 years (Uckfield 1893 September qtr Volume 2b Page 75). The 1901 census records that Ellen was widowed and she was living with her married daughter Ann Maria Hallett at Town Row, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.1 ~~ Charlotte Hyder Charlotte was born at Rotherfield in late 1858 (Uckfield 1858 December qtr Volume 2b Page 81) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 9th January 1859. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Scrags Cross, Rotherfield. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2 ~~ Ellen Hyder Ellen was born at Rotherfield in 1860 (Uckfield 1860 September qtr Volume 2b Page 88) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 8th April 1860. The 1861 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Scrags Cross, Rotherfield. The 1871 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Old Lodge Warren, Rotherfield. Ellen married David Harman in 1878 (Tonbridge 1878 September qtr Volume 2a Page 915); he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 11th January 1857 the son of James Harman and Mary Ann Breeden. David and Ellen had at least fifteen children - William (1878), Ivy (1879), Percy (1880), Lena (1881), Eva (1883), Carlton (1884), Eva (1886), Mabel (1887), May (1889), Alan (1890), Albert (1891), Arthur (1892), Ida (1894), George (1895) and Reginald (1897). At least seven of their children died in infancy and this was probably caused in part by low birth weights of babies born too closely together to give their mother time to recover before she fell pregnant again. The 1881 census records that David was a brick layer and he and his wife and their three eldest children were living at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. The 1891 census records that David was still a brick layer and he and his wife and six of their children were living at Jarvis Brook. The 1901 census records that David was a brick maker and he and his wife and only their two youngest sons were still living with them at Jarvis Brook. The 1890’s had been very hard on the family with several children dying. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.1 ~~ William Arthur Jocelyn Harman William was born at Rotherfield on 16th July 1878 (Uckfield 1878 September qtr Volume 2b Page 124) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 1st September 1878. The 1881 census records that the young boy was living with his family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. William died at Jarvis Brook in 1883 aged 5 years and he was buried at Rotherfield on 6th October 1883. The burial register records his third Christian name as Lancelyn and not Jocelyn. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.2 ~~ Ivy Louisa Harman Ivy was born at Rotherfield on 25th March 1879 (Uckfield 1879 September qtr Volume 2b Page 116) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 27th July 1879. The 1881 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her maternal grandparents at Maynards Gate, Rotherfield. Ivy married Frederick Cox at Rotherfield on 29th September 1901 (Uckfield 1901 September qtr Volume 2b Page 272). 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.3 ~~ Percy Harman Percy was born at Rotherfield on 11th November 1880 (Uckfield 1880 December qtr Volume 2b Page 115) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 13th February 1881. The 1881 census records that the 4 month old infant was living with his family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. The 1891 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Percy was a horseman for a brewery and he was living with his uncle and aunt (James and May Hammond) at West Street, West Malling. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.4 ~~ Lena Violet Harman Lena was born at Rotherfield on 19th December 1881 (Uckfield 1882 March qtr Volume 2b Page 125) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 12th March 1882. The 1891 census records that the school girl was living with her family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.5 ~~ Eva Nellie Harman Eva was born at Rotherfield on 11th March 1883 (Uckfield 1883 June qtr Volume 2b Page 123) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 10th June 1883. Eva died at Jarvis Brook in 1883 aged 4 months (Uckfield 1883 September qtr Volume 2b Page 61). She was buried at Rotherfield 27th July 1883. Eva’s name was re-used by her family in 1886. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.6 ~~ Carlton Herbert Harman Carlton was born at Rotherfield on 24th June 1884 (Uckfield 1884 September qtr Volume 2b Page 115) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 24th August 1884. Carlton died at Jarvis Brook in late December 1884 aged only 6 months (Uckfield 1884 December qtr Volume 2b Page 79). He was buried at Rotherfield on New Years Day 1885. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.7 ~~ Eva Ellen Harman Eva was born at Rotherfield on 14th July 1886 (Uckfield 1886 September qtr Volume 2b Page 128) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 12th September 1886. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that Eva was living with her uncle and aunt (James and May Hammond) at West Street, West Malling. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.8 ~~ Mabel C. Harman Mabel was born at Rotherfield in either late 1887 or early 1888. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.9 ~~ May Russell Harman May was born at Rotherfield in 1889 (Uckfield 1889 March qtr Volume 2b Page 126) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 1st February 1889. The 1891 census records that the young girl was living with her family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. May died at Rotherfield on 13th February 1897 (Uckfield 1897 March qtr Volume 2b Page 74) aged 8 years. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.10 ~~ Alan Stewart Harman Alan (Dusty) was born at Rotherfield in 1890 (Uckfield 1890 June qtr Volume 2b Page 117) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 23rd March 1890. The 1891 census records that the toddler was living with his family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. Alan married Minnie Gander at Rotherfield on 7th February 1914; she was born at Rotherfield in 1894. Alan and Minnie had at least eight children – Eva (1914), Percy (1917), Ernest (1919), Violet, Frederick, Dorothy, Ronald and Margaret. Dusty died at Crowborough in 1979 aged 89 years. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.10.1 ~~ Eva Nellie Harman Eva was born at Crowborough on 5th July 1914. She married Walter Chewter in 1934; he was born in 1910. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.10.2 ~~ Percy Alan Harman Percy was born at Meadow Cottage, Upper Poundfield near Crowborough in 1917. He married Gladys Kent at All Saints’ church, Crowborough on 20th January 1945; she was born at Gledrise Villa, Queens Road, Crowborough. Percy and Gladys had at least one child – Keith. Percy subsequently married Mary Hopkins at All Saints’ church, Crowborough on 29th December 1956; she was born in 1918 at 67 Mayfair Road, Dartford. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.10.3 ~~ Ernest Arthur Harman Ernest was born at Crowborough in 1919. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.11 ~~ Albert Cecil Harman Albert was born at Rotherfield in 1891 (Uckfield 1891 September qtr Volume 2b Page 121) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 23rd May 1891. Albert died at Rotherfield on 20th January 1894 (Uckfield 1894 March qtr Volume 2b Page 85) aged 2 ˝ years. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.12 ~~ Arthur Clifford Harman Arthur was born at Rotherfield in 1892 (Uckfield 1893 March qtr Volume 2b Page 122) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 4th December 1892. The 1901 census records that the school boy was living with his family at Jarvis Brook, Rotherfield. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.13 ~~ Ida Annie Harman Ida was born at Rotherfield in 1894 (Uckfield 1894 June qtr Volume 2b Page 126) and she was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 23rd March 1894. Ida died at Rotherfield on 5th March 1896 (Uckfield 1896 March qtr Volume 2b Page 849) aged about 2 years. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.14 ~~ George Hyder Harman George was born at Rotherfield in 1895 (Uckfield 1895 December qtr Volume 2b Page 115) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 20th November 1895. George died 5 days later on 25th November 1895 (Uckfield 1895 December qtr Volume 2b Page 71.. 1.8.3.2.3.1.5.2.2.3.2.15 ~~ Reginald Harman Reginald was born at Rotherfield in 1897 (Uckfield 1897 March qtr Volume 2b Page 124) and he was baptised at St Denys’ church, Rotherfield on 21st February 1897. Reginald died at Rotherfield shortly thereafter (Uckfield 1897 March qtr Volume 2b Page 75). |
